Pitch shots often feel difficult because golfers don’t practise them properly.

Most players will spend time hitting full shots, but those awkward half-wedge distances don’t always get the attention they deserve.

And even when golfers do practise pitching, they often just hit balls without really knowing what they’re trying to improve.

Good pitching comes down to 3 key skills:

Solid contact, swing speed control, and loft delivery.

When you train those properly, you start to get better control over contact, distance and trajectory.

So if your pitch shots feel like guesswork, the answer probably isn’t just “practise more” — it’s practise the right things.

A lot of golfers try to make a longer swing because they want more speed and more distance.

And that’s completely understandable.

The problem is that many players add length in ways that actually make the swing worse.

Instead of creating a bigger, more powerful motion, they lose structure, timing and control — and then the extra length doesn’t lead to better shots. It often leads to more inconsistency.

A longer swing can be a good thing, but only if it’s created the right way.

The goal isn’t just to swing longer.
The goal is to build a longer swing that still allows you to return the club well, strike the ball solidly, and actually play better golf.

That’s what this video is about.

Most golfers want to practise better, but the mistake I often see is that they practise every goal the same way.

If you’re trying to make a swing change, it’s okay to repeat the same club, same target and same movement. That’s how you start building the pattern.

But if your goal is to get ready for the course, your practice needs to look more like golf. Change clubs, change targets, change shots and challenge yourself to react.

Better practice isn’t always more practice. Sometimes it’s just choosing the right type of practice for what you’re trying to achieve.

Bunker shots become much easier when you stop guessing where the club should enter the sand.

A lot of golfers understand the idea of “splashing” or “exploding” the sand, but they don’t have a clear starting point. That’s where this simple line drill can really help.

Draw a line in the sand about half a shoe length before the ball, then practise getting your divot to start on that line and continue through the sand. This gives you a much clearer picture of where the club needs to enter, how much sand to take, and how much speed is required.

It’s a simple drill, but it can make a big difference to your confidence in greenside bunkers.

Most takeaway problems don’t start because the club moves badly — they start because the body doesn’t move enough.

In this golf lesson, PGA Advanced Coach Josh Lane shows a simple alignment stick drill to help golfers improve body turn, club position and clubface awareness early in the backswing.

A better takeaway gives your swing a better chance from the start.

Many golfers make chipping harder by trying to use the same club for every shot around the green.

In this short game tip, PGA Advanced Coach Josh Lane explains why better club selection can make your chipping simpler, more predictable and easier to control.

Choose the club that matches the shot — don’t force one club to do everything.

Struggling with timing, power or consistency in your golf swing? Poor sequencing often starts earlier than most golfers realise — right from the takeaway.

In this video, PGA Advanced Golf Coach Josh Lane explains why the arms taking over too early can make the swing feel rushed, disconnected and harder to repeat.

Sometimes the swing fault isn’t really the problem — the setup is.

I see this a lot with everyday golfers. They’re working hard on their swing, trying to fix contact, direction, ball flight or consistency, but the position they start in is making those problems much harder to solve.

Your grip, ball position, posture, alignment and pressure under your feet all influence what your body and club are likely to do once the swing starts.

That doesn’t mean setup fixes everything, but it does give your swing a much better chance.

Before you chase another swing tip, it’s worth asking:
“Am I giving myself the best possible chance before I even take the club away?”

If you’re not sure, that’s exactly the sort of thing we can work through in a lesson.

A bent lead arm in the backswing is something a lot of golfers worry about.

But the answer usually isn’t just “try harder to keep it straight.”

Very often, the lead arm bends because the player is using their arms to pull the club around the body. When that happens, the lead arm can get pinned across the chest, the backswing gets shorter, and the player loses width.

A better way to think about it is this:

The arms take the club up.
The body takes the club around.

When those two things work together, it becomes much easier to create a wider, more complete backswing without forcing it.

If this is something you struggle with, it’s worth getting checked properly. Sometimes the issue isn’t the arm itself — it’s the way the club is being moved in the backswing.
