Club Marine Pittwater to Coffs Harbour Race
Profile - CICERO (Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club - RPAYC)
For Mark Hellyer and CICERO, this is the boat’s first long ocean race, having been launched only last year, Mark has done numerous Gold Coast races, Southport races, S2H’s & Noumea but never a Coffs until now.
Mark and his crew are obviously aiming to win (it’s a race after all) but as it’s the first real opportunity to show what the boat can do, just like everyone else they have to hope that the conditions play into their hands! They know the boat is fast to windward so that would be great – although the crew aren’t so keen for an all upwind journey! Mark reports that CICERO goes very well reaching in the 8-14 knot range, so light to moderate Easterlies or Westerlies would be good!
When asked what drew Mark and CICERO to race this year he responded, "I love yacht racing in all its forms, but ocean racing not only amplifies the requirements of the basics such as planning, preparation and teamwork, but it also has so many additional facets; navigation, long term weather forecasting, multiple sail changes, adaptability, informed decision making and endurance (of the crew and the equipment)… all on top of the constant job of making the boat sail as fast as possible every minute of every hour for extended periods of time. To win it takes all these things to come together, putting yourself in the right location and sometimes a little bit of luck! You can’t measure your race against most of the other boats in the fleet unless they are right near you (it makes no sense to try and race a boat twice your length or with a significantly different rating), and you are generally on your own. You need confidence in yourself, your team and your boat and you need to get everything right. You need to focus on beating your close competition with the goal of winning your division, and only then if the weather has been optimum for your size of boat you just may win the race overall".
