It’s BIG happy birthday wishes to our 2003 premiership co-captain, Troy West, today as he celebrates his 52nd birthday.
Troy came to our Club in 1994 after stints with Strathmore, Footscray Seconds and Thirds and West Perth. After debuting with Brad Lloyd at Oakleigh in round 1 of 1994, he went on to play 208 games, a Club record at the time, and kick 22 goals in his #8 jumper up until he sustained a knee injury and was forced into retirement during 2005.
Troy became deputy vice-captain in 1999 before being elevated to the captaincy in 2000, a role that he held until the end of the 2002 season. He then was co-captain alongside Brad Lloyd in 2003 and 2004 before handing over the mantle to Brad for his final season with the Seagulls.
Apart from the glory of the 2003 premiership victory over Box Hill at Princes Park, Troy represented the VFL in 1998 and 1999 and made the VFL All-Star team in 1998. He took home the Ron James MVP award in 1994, 1998 and 1999, came third in the Club best and fairest award in 2000 and is a member of the WFC Hall of Fame. Troy was selected at full-back in the WFC 1990’s Team of the Decade and received life membership honours in 1995.
After coaching stints at Port Melbourne, Troy returned to the Club in recent years as a valued board member and is also heavily involved in Club 1864, our Past Players group, as well as proving a very capable MC at recent Club functions.
