Great news.
Hopefully there will be full access to Newnes in a few years.

Lithgow City Council has announced today that their application for funding for the restoration of access to the Wolgan Valley has been approved in full. With the scale of the project far beyond any work ever undertaken by Lithgow City Council, the successful application for this funding is a significant achievement.

Would you participate in a Glow Worm Tunnel Marathon, 30km or Half Marathon that has a 30-40 minute bus trip to the start on Newnes Plateau and from the finish at the Old Coach Road Gate back to your cars?

With the Wolgan Road inaccessible to Newnes this is the only way wea are going to get an event going this year that features the Glow Worm Tunnel.

Date - October 2025.

Went for a run on the Glow Worm Tunnel Trail Marathon Weekend course yesterday.

Application for the event has been submitted to National Parks.
Date if approved will be July 12-13th.

We started on the Newnes Plateau end of the tunnel and ran the course from the Old Coach Road/Tigersnake Canyon trail intersection to Newnes and then did a loop of the Industrial Ruins.

We then ran the road to Koopartoo and up the Old Coach Road to 4 Ways and into the tunnel. Finished the run off via the Pagoda Track and Old Coach Road.

The trails are in better condition than expected. Great running!

We know you are all super keen to get some info on the event this year.
We are still negotiating with National Parks for a course and date for the Glow Worm Tunnel Trail Marathon Weekend 2024 event.

There have been a few more landslides in the valley and some roads and trails remain closed. The Wolgan Road remains closed to access Newnes for visitors.

The Glow Worm Tunnel area is also getting a lot of upgrade/repair work at the moment. The tunnel is now a lot more user friendly with rails and a flat surface.

We have come up with a few course proposals for courses and a few proposed dates.

We will notify on Facebook and via the GWTM email database when we get some good news.

Great news for the school holidays!
The Glow Worm Tunnel is OPEN - until Sunday 16th July 2023, access from the Newnes Plateau side only.

We have the 30km and the Marathon approved by ITRA.
The Marathon will have 2 ITRA points and 4 Mountain Points - https://itra.run/Races/RaceCourse?raceYearId=85256
The 30km will have 1 ITRA point and 4 mountain points - https://itra.run/Races/RaceCourse?raceYearId=85257

The two events are also included in the ITRA National League - https://itra.run/Nationalleague/MoreInfo?parms=national

We are just waiting on the results to be approved and you will have your ITRA Ratings for GWTM2023.
GWTM2023 Marathon under 7:45 is a Six Foot Track Marathon Race 2024 qualifier or a ITRA rating of 407+ in the 30km or Marathon.
