Welcome to Pioneers Football & Sporting Club

Founded in 1975, Pioneers Football and Sporting Club currently run a team in the Newman National Football League, an A Grade and two B Grade teams in the Newman Netball Association, a cricket team in the Newman Cricket Association, two Touch Rugby teams in the Newman Touch Rugby Association and a Mens Basketball team. Being the only club in Newman to represent in multiple sporting competitions is a credit to the members of the mighty Pioneers Football and Sporting Club! We always welcome new players for all sporting competitions, and for those that don't play we have social memberships so please come and join our wonderful family sporting club.

Last weekend, Newman Netball Association celebrated an incredible milestone. 50 years of netball in our community! 💙

Pioneers were proudly represented throughout the day, with our members taking to the court as players, volunteering on the BBQ, umpiring games and cheering from the sidelines. It was fantastic to see so many of our club members involved in such a special celebration 💙❤️

A massive congratulations to our Pioneers Mixed Netball Team, who were crowned 2026 NNA 50th Anniversary Carnival Champions! 🏆👏

At the End of Season Presentations we saw many of our members acknowledged for their volunteering and service to NNA.
Two of our players received NNA season awards, a massive congratulations!

🏆 NNA Grand Final Friday 7th August 8pm

Pioneers played Saints in footy for the Esme Cup, an annual game in honour of Damien McCarthy.

Damien McCarthy was a young and talented footballer who played for both Saints and Pioneers. In 1990, his final year with Saints, he was awarded Best and Fairest, with John Amphlett as captain. That year, Saints won the flag. Damien later moved to Pioneers, where his partner at the time played netball. During his time with Pioneers, he continued to shine, winning Best and Fairest in 1991.

On the day of his passing, Damien had just played a game for Pioneers against Saints. In that match, John Amphlett was named Best on Ground, and Alan Whybourn captained Pioneers. Tragically, after the game, while driving youth back to community, Damien was killed in a car accident near Auski.

Outside of football, Damien was deeply committed to supporting young people, regularly travelling to remote communities as part of his work. In his memory, the Esme Cup was created — a light-hearted tribute to his resemblance to the character Esme from the TV show A Country Practice.

It was great for everyone to come together at Saints for the awards!

This week footy play their final game for the regular season! The boys play to retain the Esme Cup. The Esme Cup is an important game in the calendar against Saints in honour of Damien McCarthy.
Pioneers present the Alan Whybourn Medal, named after Alan Whybourn — a premiership player, club Best and Fairest winner, and key figure in the club during the 1980s.

ROUND 10!

This week’s footy round is played in memory of Charlie Salmon - a dedicated umpire, NNFL footy ambassador, and honorary member of our club ❤️💙

Charlie sadly passed away while umpiring at Capi Oval on Saturday 17 June, 2000. To honour his legacy and the tradition he started of sharing a beer 🍻 at each club after games.
NNFL players and supporters now take part in an annual “stroll” between clubs. It’s our way of remembering the dedication, spirit and love Charlie had for the game and the people in it.
We encourage all our supporters to head to Tigers at 5:45pm before strolling to Pioneers at 3/4 time.

Our members were proud to wear the 2026 NAIDOC netball dresses and football jerseys designed by club member Isaac Yallabah. Isaac is a 17 year old Martu boy from Kunawarritji residing in Newman. This is Isaac’s first year playing for Pioneers and it was a privilege to wear his design and hear his story 👏
