Brain injury is often described as an invisible disability. A person may look completely fine on the outside while experiencing significant changes to their memory, communication, concentration, emotions, behaviour, fatigue or ability to process information.
What may look like frustration, confusion, forgetfulness or “challenging behaviour” can have a much deeper story behind it.
💙 Instead of asking, “What’s wrong with them?”
Try asking, “What might they be experiencing?”
Understanding changes how we see people.
And how we support them.
This Brain Injury Awareness Week, we're encouraging everyone to look beyond what you see and understand what you might not.

This week is Brain Injury Awareness Week led by Synapse - Australia's Brain Injury Organisation. This week, we're taking some time to talk about brain injury, what it is, how it can affect someone and, most importantly, why understanding the person behind the injury matters.

Acquired brain injury (ABI) can happen for many reasons, including traumatic brain injury, stroke, concussion, lack of oxygen, infection, brain tumours and other conditions.

The effects of brain injury can be wide-ranging. They may affect a person's memory, concentration, communication, movement, emotions, behaviour, fatigue, relationships and ability to manage everyday activities.

But perhaps one of the most important things to understand is that brain injury is often an invisible disability.

Someone may look completely well on the outside while experiencing significant changes to how they think, feel, communicate or interact with the world around them.

And no two brain injuries are the same.

The impact of an injury depends on many factors, including the type and location of the injury and the individual person. What works for one person may not work for another.

At I Am Here, we believe that understanding these differences is an important part of providing genuinely person-centred support.

Throughout Brain Injury Awareness Week, we'll be sharing facts, lived experiences and stories that help us look beyond the diagnosis and see the person.

Because brain injury may be part of someone's story, but it isn't the whole story. 💙

Today he took in the sights at Christ Church Cathedral Newcastle NSW which is currently undergoing vital restoration works to restore the Gothic Revival style cathedral to its former glory. Today, on International Nurses Day, we want to take a moment to celebrate not only the founder of modern nursing Florence Nightingale, but also the incredible force behind so much of what makes our service exceptional, our Clinical Nurse Manager Lauren. 💜

Since joining our team, she has completely transformed the clinical landscape of our organisation. Through her leadership, knowledge, and unwavering commitment to best practice, she has overhauled our clinical systems, processes and policies, and helped shape a service that is now recognised as a leader in supporting participants with high needs and clinically complex care. 🩺

Her impact reaches far beyond paperwork and procedures. She has built confidence within our teams, empowered staff through education and guidance, advocated fiercely for participant wellbeing, and created a culture where quality care is never compromised.

But beyond all of that, she is just a genuinely beautiful human. The kind of person who leads with compassion, supports without judgement, and somehow manages to make even the hardest days feel manageable. She is deeply respected, endlessly appreciated, and absolutely adored by our team.

In moments of chaos, she is calm. In moments of uncertainty, she is wisdom. Honestly… she’s basically our clinical Yoda. ✨

Thank you for the countless hours, the impossible standards you somehow continue to exceed, and the care and passion you pour into our service. The difference you have made is immeasurable, and we are so incredibly lucky to have you leading the way.
