With a heavy heart, we have heard that our mate, Wally Atkins, passed away yesterday.
It’s hard to imagine the Tasmanian Hockey Center without Wally. For so many of us, he wasn’t just part of the hockey community—he was the hockey community. From the moment you walked through the gates, Wally’s warm smile and endless enthusiasm were always there to greet you, whether you were buying gear, talking tactics, or just stopping by for one of his famous chats (which, let’s be honest, could last longer than most matches!). He would always have a lineup of sticks to re-grip for the kids.
As a goalkeeper, Wally understood us more than most. He played a huge role in our Shotstoppers community, not just sharing tips and tricks but also creating bonds that went beyond the field. He had a way of making everyone feel part of something bigger—a team, a family, a home.
And of course, there was the shop. Wally turned the hockey shop into more than just a place to grab a stick or some tape. It was a hub, a meeting point, and occasionally a spot for solving the world’s problems (or at least discussing last week’s game in great detail). If you needed advice, a laugh, or a story, Wally was your man.
Wally brought people together, gave them confidence, and made the hockey center feel like a second home. His presence will be deeply missed, but his legacy will be felt every time we visit the shop. We won't stop talking about you Wally Atkins!
Rest in peace, Wally. You were the ultimate Shotstopper in every sense, and we’ll keep playing on in your honor.
Our thoughts are with Sarah, Will, George and your family.
