The ultimate aim of the martial arts is not having to use them. Miyamoto Musashi
Most people train hard in their chosen field in order to use their skills and be really good at what they do. The warrior trains hard to develop his martial arts skills, but does so hoping that he will never really have to use them.
He knows that using his skills outside of the dojo or maybe a tournament or two, means that someone is going to get hurt, probably bad. True warriors are men and women of peace. They don't want to have to hurt anyone that they don’t have to, but they are ready, willing, and able to do just that should a situation arise that requires them to do so.
They are not perfecting their martial arts skills in order to go out and use them; they are perfecting their skills in case they ever have to use them. His ultimate aim is the perfection of character, not the destruction of life; but his overall goal of perfecting his character, in no way means that he is unwilling to use his martial arts should he need them.
Many people have a hard time understanding this fact. They think that warriors train to kill people because they are brutes. This could not be further from the truth! True warriors are not brutes, but men and women who have a set of martial skills and who have trained for excellence in every area of their lives. The true warrior is a man or woman of character, honor, integrity, and control. He knows what he can do and has no desire to go out and prove his skills to the world.
