Today is World Osteoporosis Day, so let's talk about your bone health.

Decreased bone density occurs when bones lose minerals such as calcium faster than the body can replace them. Low bone density is known as osteopenia and is the range of bone density between normal bones and osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis is a condition where bones become thin, weak and fragile. It's most common in older women, affecting over 1 in 4 women aged over 75, and can result in fractures due to simple bumps or falls.

Although bone density does decline with age, regular exercise can help to slow the rate of bone loss, strengthen your bones and prevent osteoporosis.

So, what types of exercise are best?

👉 Weight bearing exercises that put stress on your bones, like jumping, dancing and resistance training
👉 Balance exercises that can help to reduce your falls risk

If you have osteoporosis, it's good to get advice from an Accredited Exercise Physiologist (AEP). They can help to reduce falls risk and improve bone health whilst ensuring you're exercising safely and within your ability.
