Well the team went to Round 3 of SEKQLD at Ipswich last weekend for a 1 day event on Sat 30th May.

It was certainly a day of mixed fortunes for Matrix Motorsport.

The cooler than suspected weather and heavy rain through the week provided a challenge.

Practice had us second guessing the choices made in preparation and then again earlier in practice. Not to mention the fact we had 2 similar mechanical issues on both karts which robbed us of track time early in the 3 hour session.

Heading into Qually we just still didn't have the grip we needed, so we dropped down the grid, so heading into race 1 the 5 hour event we were unsure on the outcome. Since we were already struggling and had dropped back from the leaders we decided to run our same strategy but also just get on with finding the issue with the setup on both karts. So one kart at a time we pulled in and made changes until we were happy, knowing that it would serve us well in Race 2 the 4 hour event.

While as a team we got the 397 working very well, the 787 seemed to be a harder egg to crack and it struggled even in the 4 hour race. Leaving it's drivers scratching their heads as to why.

In the start of the 4 hour we managed to move forward with the 397 and get to the back of the leading 2 karts. The 787 however continued to struggle, breaking a front right stub axle and a steering arm issue which caused a SK period both times didn't help them.

With the 397 still managing to grab 3rd place in Sportsman, at least we some positives from race day, narrowly missing out on the Sportsman win in the 4 hour by 1.4 secs. An excursion in the kitty litter by Lee dropped us back to sixth, then with a strong comeback from Vance we got almost to the back of third place before being baulked badly by a lapped kart, even if we had made the pass clean and got the win it would have only tied us with 2nd in Sportsman for the day.

A great effort by the team and we will keep pushing and make the best of each opportunity as we continue through the rest of the rounds.

The key will be to re build the 787 stronger and help get them back on the podium and going for the top step, fingers crossed as they say in racing sometimes you also need a little luck ;)

Next round we are off to Cooloola again and build on our lessons learnt from Round 1.

Thanks to the Club for hosting the round at Ipswich, thanks to all the officials. Best wishes to Nancy as she recovers in hospital and couldn't be there Sat. Thanks to all the competitors who raced hard all day and made the event challenging.

Big thanks to Michelle for her help all day keeping us on the right strategy and moving forward.

Thanks to our drives for never giving up and working as a team and bringing both karts home.

Thanks to Revolution Racegear for their sponsorship of the series and awarding their prizes at each round, we were lucky enough to win a $100 gift voucher this round.

We went into Round 2 of the SEK 2026 with more confidence.

With the team applying the lessons learnt from round 1, we all worked hard with strategy and preparation.

A few long days and few long nights saw the team ready to go Friday night arriving early at the track on Saturday morning to see how well the results of the preparation fared.

As luck had it the weather conditions weren't as anticipated, with changing conditions and occasional rain meaning we had to fully utilise the practice day to dial in the settings we needed for race day on Sunday.

A few engine dramas in final practice on Sunday morning, saw Vance having to change an engine just before the race.

The Casa Racing #397 kart had a solid start overall despite first lap shenanigans, finishing the first stint well placed at the top end of the field. But they couldn't complain that they were not ina race as the first 55mins was a dog fight on track with plenty of passing and re passing going on.

They maintained their position in the top 4 for most of the race, and with great strategy set themselves up for a good run to the finish in 2nd.

Shapecut Racing #787 Kart, had a troubled run with a setup issue after the late engine change that couldn't be rolled back because we forgot we tried it and surprise it didn't work.. They dropped back at the beginning but stormed home with good pace in the rain affected last stint and great management of the strategy by Michelle all day sent them to 3rd pace in the end.

Then the rain started heading into the last hour, throwing up challenge after challenge for the whole field.

With all runners on slicks through the rain, there was plenty of chaos, setting up an exciting finish as the track dried.

With our efforts of the last month in testing paying off and our efforts on race day, the #397 came home 2nd outright as well as taking out the 1st place in the Sportsman Class. The #787 kart rising up for a hard fought third and taking the hard charger award as well after their early issue in the race, we can hold our heads up high and as they say never give up.

So a great weekend was had by all at Matrix Motorsports and now its heads down and prep for Ipswich at the end of May.

With the #787 now sitting in 2nd overall and the #397 sitting in 3rd overall we just have to keep our momentum going and keep pushing in the races and nailing the setup and doing the hard work in the workshop to make sure the karts can go flat out and run clean to the end in the races to come. We will give it our best on all fronts and live for that first win, to motivate us onwards and upwards.

With a big thanks to our sponsors, who have helped us get to every round so far ready to race and as best prepared as we can be:

United Fasteners
ARC
Bobbin & Thread

“Age before beauty… and plenty of laps behind it.”
As we build toward Round 2 of the SEK QLD 2026 Endurance Series, preparation is well underway. The team has been hard at work refining the karts and building on the lessons from Round 1.
In the lead-up to each round, we’re giving our supporters a closer look at the people behind Matrix Motorsport. First up—our oldest campaigner, Lee Robinson.
Lee’s passion for motorsport goes back a long way, but he didn’t jump behind the wheel until 2015—after spending three years trackside volunteering as a flag marshal in Mount Isa.
That first year set the tone. A win in TaG 100, a steep learning curve, and plenty of time on the tools supporting his daughter Alecia’s racing as well.
A move back to the coast raised the bar significantly, with stronger fields and tougher competition.
• 2017 – Limited running but secured a podium (3rd) in the final year of Sportsman competition.
• 2018–2020 – Consistent front-runner in TaG Restricted Medium at Cooloola Coast Kart Club, with regular podium finishes and increased travel to build experience.
• 2019 – Took on TaG Restricted Light, giving away 5kg and proving how tough that category can be.
• 2021 – A standout year, taking out the TaG Restricted Championship at Cooloola in a tightly fought season.
• 2022 – Stepped up to TaG Open across Cooloola, Warwick, and Ipswich—strong competition, valuable experience, and a handful of wins.
• 2023 – Joined Ipswich Kart Club, competing in the growing Masters category. Opened the season with a podium and remained a consistent top-10 finisher. Also tested himself in Superkarts QLD before a Lakeside accident cut the season short.
• 2024 – A year interrupted, with only one round completed before a shoulder replacement sidelined the season.
• 2025 – Returned to strong Masters fields at Ipswich and joined Matrix Motorsport for the SEK QLD Endurance Series. Partnering with Vance, the duo fought through a tough start to secure 3rd place in the Sportsman Series.
Now in 2026, Lee continues that partnership with Vance in kart #397, with the focus firmly on pushing higher up the order and building a serious championship campaign.

To explain our race numbers this year also we are using 787 and 397.

787 pays tribute to the mighty Mazda 787b from Le Mans & 397 is the maximum laps achieved at Le Mans, with this theme for 2026 we want to achieve our first win and also be consistantly on or as close to the lead lap as we can at the finish of events.

Our 2026 Livery also is the retro style of the 787b to continue the Endurance Racing theme for the team.
