I did hear some reports of Salmon bust ups along Stockton Beach last weekend. Maybe some fun on light spinning gear if they venture close to shore.

I hope the Tailor and Bream aren't too far behind them as we come into the cooler months.

As per the email sent out on Thursday and again on Friday morning our monthly competition for April was postponed until next weekend (17th - 19th).

Fingers crossed for better weather next weekend and hope to see members next Sunday at the weigh-in at Little Beach boat ramp.

Members and Followers,

A brief commentary following our March competition outing last weekend.

After a southerly blow on Friday there was some residual swell on the Saturday and plenty of spaces available at Little Beach boat ramp. The R-Ageing Rabbit was impacted by mechanical issues and was back on shore at 7am, the LachJess crew had a lazy start to the day launching around 9am.

The Saturday morning session was fruitful, albeit in challenging conditions, with plenty of Bonito about and a few quality reds in the shallows. As the weather improved over the course of the day the LachJess ventured out wide and although the current was raging, we managed some reasonable fish.

Margaret Norgard finished well in front with several reds north of 2.5Kg, the biggest tipping the scales at 3.1Kg!

It was great to see a few new members at the weigh-in and BBQ on the Sunday. Peter had a nice feed of whiting and dusky flathead from the estuary which included a 750g Bream.

Overall, a great day on the water on Sunday and some quality fish presented. Looking forward to catching up for our next outing, Friday 10th - Sunday 12th April (following the Easter weekend)

Members,

Not the greatest weather today, rain and a strong southerly wind whipping up the swell and seas.

I can confirm the competition outing will proceed this weekend as the wind and swell is forecast to abate over the weekend. Hopefully the swell continues to drop over Saturday and Sunday with 1.3m forecast by mid-morning on Sunday. The wind is also forecast to swing around to the East.

I have attached a few screen shots of the forecast (W***y Weather, Windy and BOM) for more details.

February Competition Outing Summary (Friday 13th - Sunday 15th Feb)

Ramps were busy from 5:15am as our competition weekend coincided with the Game Fishing Interclub. Parking at Little Beach boat ramp was at a premium and it was a traffic jam at Cabbage Tree fishing for live bait on Saturday and Sunday mornings.

Some nice fish were presented by our members with a 60cm red (2.4Kg), a 53cm Bluespot Flathead and a small 3Kg Kingfish to name a few. Some good catches of Whiting in the estuary but the Duskies were hard to find further up the river.

It was good to see a few new members (Stevens Family) join the club and participate in their first competition outing of the year. One of our juniors, "Big Zane" Stevens, landed a nice 1.6Kg red in his first outing off Port Stephens.

As mentioned in my last post the Wests Diggers Nelson Bay Fishing Club held its AGM on 7th Feb 2026. It was a great night with members enjoying a meal and some music at Wests following the AGM and presentation of awards for the 2025 competition season.

Unfortunately, the weather was not overly favourable last weekend (Friday 13 - 15th), and we postponed our competition outing in the hope for better conditions this weekend. The good news is it is shaping up to be a great weekend across our February competition outing (1800 Friday 20 - 1300 Sunday 22nd Feb). Saturday and Sunday mornings look to be favourable all categories (B&R, L&E, Deep Sea). See the screen shots from BOM, Windy and W***y Weather apps.

Prospective Anglers and Members,

Please see the competition schedule for the 2026 Calendar year. We fish the second full weekend of each month (with the exception of Mother Day weekend) and run the Weigh-In at Little Beach from 1300 on the Sunday afternoon.

Looking forward to another successful year and swapping stories about the one that got away.
