FINALS - NEWS 2019

On Friday, the Western Wasps completed in the last day of the National Electric Wheelchair Sports, which saw them compete in three finals games for each sport.

First up was the 3rd place playoff for Powerchair Football against the Victorian Pride Warriors. Unfortunately this match did not go the way of the Western Wasps. A lackluster performance with set plays and pieces not being executed correctly resulted in a win for the Victorians.

Next up was the grand final match for Powerchair Hockey, again against the Victorian Pride Warriors. This match was a very tight battle, with the first half finishing in a 0-0 draw. Unfortunately, the second half saw a slight mistake in the Wasps' defensive structure, which allowed the Victorians to score a goal. The Wasps couldn't get a goal back before the siren sounded, but were very impressed with their improved performance and of being awarded 2nd place.

The Wasps' final match for the day and tournament was the 3rd place playoff for Rugby League, once again against the Victorian Pride Warriors! This was the best match of Rugby League the Wasps have played in a while. Brilliant attacking plays and defense, saw the Wasps secure the win and the 3rd place trophy.

Congratulations to the NSW Strikers for securing first place in both Powerchair Football and Rugby League, and the Victorian Pride Warriors for securing first place in Powerchair Hockey!

Once the matches were over it was on to the presentation dinner, where individual and team awards were presented! A massive well done to our own Rebecca Evans (Vice Captain) for being awarded WA's Best and Fairest, as well as being selected for the first time for the All-Australian Team!

The Western Wasps would like to finish by thanking all of our supporters - without you attending this event would not be possible!

Final Results:
Powerchair Football 3rd Place Playoff: WA 0 - 2 VIC
Powerchair Hockey Grand Final: WA 0 - 1 VIC
Rugby League 3rd Place Playoff: WA 36 - 6 VIC

RUGBY LEAGUE - NEWS 2019

Yesterday was the third and final day of the round robins for NEWS, seeing teams competing for a spot in the Rugby League final.

The first match for the Western Wasps was against the SA Scorpions. Despite a strong start, the Wasps were unable to keep up the pressure. This allowed the Scorpions in to match, who secured themselves the win.

Next up was the NSW Strikers. The Wasps knew this match would be their toughest of the day, going against a team who has won numerous consecutive Rugby League grand finals. Even though they didn’t score, the Wasps managed to keep their cool and their defence strong. Despite the loss, the Wasps kept their heads up knowing it could have been a lot worse!

The third and final match was against the Victorian Pride Warriors. The Wasps’ defence and attack finally paid off in this match. With many gaps created and tries scored. Their first win of the day in the last match left the Wasps on a high.

Today is a rest day before the Wasps will compete for 1st place in Powerchair Hockey and 3rd place in Powerchair Football and Rugby League in the finals on Friday!

Final Results:
WA 12 - 22 SA
WA 0 - 32 NSW
WA 22 - 4 VIC

POWER HOCKEY - NEWS 2019

Yesterday was the second day of the round robins for NEWS, and featured the sport of Power Hockey. What an exciting day for the Western Wasps!

First up was our match against the NSW Strikers. Our defensive structure and play definitely paid off in this one, managing to keep the other team to only one goal! The Wasps managed to score a backhand shot which deflected into goal too, resulting in a draw!

Next up was the SA Scorpions. This match was rather one-sided, giving the Wasps an opportunity to practice their attacking setup. A flurry of goals resulted, leading the Wasps to the win!

Last up was the Victorian Pride Warriors. We went in to this match (the last of the day) knowing this would be the toughest test of our set ups and training. Unfortunately the Pride Warriors were too strong for our defence, which broke down under pressure. While the Wasps managed to score a goal of their own, the Pride Warriors scored many of their own goals - leading to the Wasps first loss of the day.

Despite that the Western Wasps will be competing in the Grand Final for Power Hockey, making it on goal difference!

Final Results:
WA 1 - 1 NSW
WA 7 - 0 NSW
WA 1 - 7 VIC

POWERCHAIR FOOTBALL - NEWS 2019

First up in the round robin was Powerchair Football yesterday. A great start to the day saw the Western Wasps secure a win in their first match against the Victorian Pride Warriors. Next up, the match against the formidle NSW Strikers. A hard slog and great passing by the Strikers saw the Wasps defeated. Last up was an exciting game against the SA Scorpions. After the Wasps slotted home the first goal, it was an exchange of goals from both sides for much of the match. Unfortunately the Scorpions pushed in a goal in dying minutes to place them one ahead. Not leaving the Wasps enough time to come back.

As a result of this we will be competing in the Powerchair Football 3rd place playoff on Saturday!

Final Results:
WA 1 - 0 VIC
WA 0 - 6 NSW
WA 2 - 3 SA
