Momentum continues to build on on the construction of a new synthetic athletics track at Sydney Academy of Sport.

Site clearing and demolition are nearing completion and excavation for the new drainage system is underway.

Bulk earthworks and surface profiling are also advancing alongside ongoing trenching for essential site services, including stormwater, irrigation and other reticulation systems.

Subbase firmness testing is scheduled for mid‑March, representing a key step in preparation for the next phases of construction.

Work is officially underway on the redevelopment of the Sydney Academy of Sport’s Athletics Track, marking a strong start to the year for the local athletics community.

Office of Sport Deputy Secretary Adam Berry joined Member for Wakehurst Michael Regan, Member for Pittwater Jacqui Scruby, CC Pines Pty Ltd Executive Chairman Ben Pines and NSW athletics representatives to turn the first sod on the $6.7 million project.

The new track will be built by CC Pines Pty Ltd and specialist athletics track surface consultants Polytan, delivering a new World Athletics compliant synthetic track featuring a moisture resilient surface, upgraded asphalt subbase, improved drainage and stormwater systems and enhanced accessibility.

The new track is scheduled to be open ahead of the 2026–27 athletics season. In the meantime, the temporary grass athletics track at the Sydney Academy of Sport will remain available for the community.

In exciting news for the Northern Beaches athletics community, the Office of Sport has announced the project scope and timeline for the new $6.7 million athletics track at the Sydney Academy of Sport which will see the track scheduled to reopen during Q3 2026.

Other project milestones include track designs by October 2025, a track builder appointed in November and construction commencing in December.

The new track will be a World Athletics (WA) compliant synthetic athletics track with a moisture resilient track surface, new asphalt subbase, drainage and stormwater system upgrades and accessibility improvements.

While the new track is being constructed the temporary grass athletics track at the Sydney Academy of Sport will continue to be available to the athletics community.
