Heading for the hills soon?

While most visitors were well prepared for the conditions, last year at Mt Hotham alone, around 5700 vehicles were turned around by police and authorised officers for not carrying appropriate wheel chains to drive in the snow.

Remember: It is a legal requirement to carry suitable wheel chains at all times during the snow season when entering an alpine resort area. They must be fitted when directed to do so or it is snow go.

Follow these snow trip tips, to make sure you are prepared to make your way to the slopes safely ⤵

❄️ Drive cautiously – keep two hands on the wheel, use gradual pressure on the accelerator to avoid wheel spin, brake gently and avoid unnecessary gear changes.
❄️ Avoid braking when cornering and use a low gear when driving down the mountain.
❄️ Maintain a safe braking distance from vehicles in front, especially in poor visibility.
❄️ If you hit ice, remain calm and apply the brakes gently to slowly regain traction.
❄️ Only use low beam lights when driving at night. High beams do not work in high mist areas.
❄️ If you can’t see - pull over somewhere safe, put on your hazard lights on and keep your engine running.
❄️ Ensure your car’s radiator is filled with anti-freeze and, if you’re driving a diesel, use Alpine Mix.

If you’re heading out always let someone know where you’re going and how long you’re expecting to be away and regularly check conditions as they can change quickly.

Heading to the snow this weekend? ❄

Alpine roads can be deceiving, and while this wasn’t a day where snow chains were needed, we're asking all drivers to be vigilant and to drive to the conditions.

Driving in snowy conditions requires a lot of concentration and patience. Stay calm if you’re stuck in a long queue and always follow road signs and directions by resort staff, they are there for your safety.

We have local police, police on Alpine deployments & Highway Patrol members patrolling these roads, monitoring these behaviours and enforcing road rules. We also encourage people to contact police with any dashcam footage you may have of dangerous driving, we want everyone to enjoy their trip to the snow and make it home safely.

There's snow shortcuts when snow driving!

Heading up to the snow this school holidays? Before you leave, ensure you check road conditions by visiting VicTraffic or downloading the VicTraffic app.

Whilst driving in the snow, make sure you;
❄ Drive cautiously with two hands on the wheel and steady pressure on the accelerator
❄ Brake with steady pressure
❄ Avoid braking when cornering
❄ Fit chains to your tyres when advised or if the road looks icy
❄ Engage low gear when you drive down a mountain
❄ If you hit ice, remain calm and apply the brakes gently to slowly regain traction.
❄ At night, only use low beam lights. High beams do not work in high mist areas. If you can’t see, pull over, put on your hazard lights and keep your engine running.
