🚨 Important Update for Fi****ms Owners & the Wider Community 🚨
Recent rushed changes to State and Federal laws have been passed through Parliament targeting law-abiding fi****ms owners—along with broader attacks on personal freedoms that will affect all Australians.
These changes were pushed through without any consultation process whatsoever.
At this stage, the Regulations to the Fi****ms Acts have not yet been drafted. We can only hope a common-sense approach is taken when these regulations are written.
Last week, Kevin Hogan, Gurmesh Singh and Richie Williamson took the time to meet with shooters. They outlined the proposed changes, answered questions, and encouraged people to contact the Premier through their offices (contact details below).
To assist, we have summarised what has already passed. This is not an exhaustive list, but covers the main points.
State Changes
• Removal of the right of appeal for fi****ms licensing applications
• Mandatory club membership for recreational hunting/vermin control
• Limits on fi****ms ownership:
– Maximum of 10 fi****ms for certain genuine reasons
– Higher numbers only with Commissioner approval
• Licences limited to a maximum 2-year term
• Reclassification of pump, straight-pull and push-button actions (appearing to no longer fall under Categories A or B)
• Magazine capacity limits:
– Shotguns: 5 rounds
– Other fi****ms: 10 rounds
• A proposed gun buy-back, funded by both State and Federal governments
Federal Changes
The Federal Bill prohibits the import of most fi****ms and related items, effectively stopping essential equipment for shooters from entering the country.
This will affect end users in every state, regardless of local legislation.
Submissions to MPs
We believe the following common-sense issues must be addressed:
• Restoration of the right of appeal
• No reclassification of pump and straight-pull rimfire fi****ms and air rifles
• Clear criteria for approval of additional fi****ms where genuinely required
• No reduction of magazine capacities for rimfire fi****ms and air rifles
• The immense cost of a buy-back to Australian taxpayers
Every taxpayer will be paying for this—every Australian will effectively be buying a firearm. While it is claimed this is about saving lives, statistics clearly show that licensed fi****ms owners are not the issue.
If saving lives were truly the goal, would it not make more sense to invest billions into road safety improvements or hospitals instead?
After speaking with Richie, all correspondence must be sent to MPs’ offices before the end of February.
