# PLANNING OFFICIALS RECOMMEND PANEL APPROVE ERARING COAL ASH DAM EXPANSION

The state government has recommended a massive coal ash dam expansion be approved for a power station near Newcastle, despite it being deemed such an earthquake risk it closed a nearby sports camp..

Fears about a potential ash dam collapse at Origin Energy's Eraring power station in Lake Macquarie the event of an earthquake prompted the closure of the nearby Myuna Bay sport and recreation centre in March.

The fears were raised at a time when Origin was pursuing plans to expand Eraring's coal ash dam, the same dam deemed an earthquake risk.

The planning department has recommended to the Independent Planning Commission that the expansion be approved with strict conditions.

It comes after Origin said the expansion would have no impact on the dam's stability, as the structural issues are nearly 600 metres away from the planned augmentation work.
