The Australian Hapkido Association began in Sydney in 1980 by Grand Master Matthew Sung Su Kim at the City Gym in Oxford St. There are now many clubs throughout NSW. The Murwillumbah Club was started by Warwick Ford in the early 80's in Kay St. Warwick was Grand Master Kim's first student to achieve Black Belt. Warwick ran the club until 1988, when he handed over the club to one of his students, M
ark Bergquist. Mark Bergquist ran the club for some time and built it up to being one of the larger Hapkido clubs in the northern region. During Mark Bergquist's time running the club he moved the venue to the Murwillumbah Gym in the CBD area of town. In 1999 Mark had to hand the club over to one of his students, Mark Fendley, now 3rd Degree Black Belt. Not long after, Mark Fendley was joined by a then 2nd Degree Phil Eizenberg, now 5th Degree, to assist in the running of the club. Phil Eizenberg was very influential in the training at the club for 8 years or so, and gained his 4th Degree prior to starting his own club. While Phil was at the Murwillumbah club, both Mark and Phil produced a number of Black Belts most of whom have moved on. In 2012 Murwillumbah Hapkido moved venues to the new "Community Hall" at Murwillumbah East Primary School in Charles St. Mark Fendley handed the club over to Martha Turner in 2016. We have recently moved to the Murwillumbah Autumn Club, 16 Tumbulgum Rd Murwillumbah. Currently the club has 3 instructors: Martha Turner and Terry Turner, both 2nd Degrees and Arna Baartz, 1st Degree.. These instructors give up their time to pass on this great martial art for the love of training and teaching, for no payment, as the club is non profit and all fees go back into the club to cover costs. If you want to get fit and be able to defend yourself, then go to the contact page and sign on. The first lesson is "free", so what are you waiting for, you've got the invitation. (updated 24/8/2022)
