Over the past fortnight, I attended a number of hearings at the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Su***de both to support an incredibly brave friend delivering her witness statement, as a representative of RSL NSW and for myself as someone who grappled with suicidality and lost a number of military mates to su***de. It was heavy and hard yet cathartic attending these hearings as I got to meet the exceptional staff of the Royal Commission, including Counsel Assisting the Royal Commission, Erin Longbottom KC, who supported me to produce my own 30 page witness statement with my recommendations to reduce su***de rates in our veteran community. I re-read my statement and reflected on the progress I have made since my darkest days post medical discharge from Army when I felt like a complete failure and totally hopeless. Through the power of sport and continuing to support veterans and families through volunteer roles in the veteran community, I have felt a sense of strong purpose and achievement.
As the Royal Commission heads into it's final days of the final hearing block, it is on us all as a community to ensure we keep shining a light on the struggles faced by those who have served in the military and to help them and their families to not just survive but to thrive post service. This is a video excerpt from just after my medical separation when I was struggling to find purpose post service which I dug help as next week I have the incredible opportunity to speak to an Army Battalion about my lived experience. Here I will share how I navigated the difficulties coming out of the military and ways to safeguard against poor mental health outcomes. This presentation will be at the base where I last wore my Army uniform which will no doubt bring up some bittersweet feelings yet also reinforce the incredible and sometimes unexpected paths that can be forged if we are passionate and believe in the cause we are fighting for.
