Tanren (鍛錬), or forging and conditioning, is an important part of our dojo training. As a beginner, the syllabus establishes a foundation through kihon-waza (basic techniques), makou-hou (yoga stretching), kinniku (muscle training), hansha (reflex) and kakeashi (running) 鍛錬. These exercises develop basic technique, mobility, strength, reaction, endurance and the physical resilience needed for karate training.
As the student progresses, more specific forms of 鍛錬 are incorporated. Sanchin-tanren-hou develops breathing, posture, tension and whole-body connection, while makiwara develops striking mechanics, focus and impact. Nintai-ryoku-kunren (endurance training) builds perseverance and the ability to endure discomfort and challenge.
By the time a student reaches Ikkyu, Shodan or Nidan, 鍛錬 becomes increasingly specialised. The focus shifts towards tokui-waza, kumite and kata tanren, refining the techniques and skills that are most important to the individual practitioner.
For me, I particularly enjoy kihon-waza and kakeashi 鍛錬 and the challenge of running and conditioning, but I know I need to give more attention to za-zen (sitting meditation), makiwara 鍛錬 or training that strengthens my back. As I get older, 鍛錬 reminds me that progress is not about doing everything, but about continuing to forge the body, mind and spirit through purposeful and consistent training.
