The round robin phase of the Men’s Open grade has wrapped up at the Asia Pacific Opens Touch Cup in Mudgee and, ahead of this afternoon’s Trans Tasman test between the Emus and Touch Blacks, here’s where things currently stand.

As expected, Australia topped Pool A, undefeated across their four round robin games. Cook Islands were impressive in their three wins to finish behind the Emus in second, while newcomers Sri Lanka, led by Josh Rozairo, surprised many to nab third. Singapore and Chinese Taipei rounded out Pool A, coming in fourth and fifth respectively.

In Pool B, New Zealand matched the Australians, undefeated in a clinical display. Lebanon overcame Samoa in a crucial round robin fixture leaving the Samoans in third place, sending Hong Kong China and Greece to the playoff qualifier.

Where to from here? Australia and New Zealand play a Trans Tasman test which will serve as an appetiser for their potential meeting later on in the tournament. As the fourth placed side in Pool B, Hong Kong China crosses over to play Chinese Taipei, who placed fifth in Pool A, in a Playoff Qualifier. The reward for the winner is to play the juggernaut Australian side in a quarter final matchup. Singapore and Greece will do the same on the other side of the draw, the winners set to face the Kiwis. The losers of those matches will play off in a three-test series for 9th and 10th. Lebanon and Sri Lanka meet in a quarter final, while Pacific neighbours Cook Islands and Samoa do battle in another quarter final, both matches set to be tight, tense affairs.
