Vale Ian Shields.

Castlemaine Golf Club sends our deep condolences to the family and friends of Ian Shields who passed away suddenly last week.

Ian was an extremely active and popular member of the club, both playing and volunteering, with a personable and cheerful manner with everyone he came across, member and visitor alike. He was an integral part of the Wednesday Warrior volunteers and was always took on jobs which might otherwise have been missed - improving the area around the clubhouse, spraying for weeds, brushcutting, growing 'Ian's lawn', covertly planting daffodil bulbs, watering recently planted trees - but also helping with the bigger jobs. His speciality was bonfires, which appeared and were burnt all over the course. The occasional minor escape was a small price to pay! Away from the work he was also a provider of his own freshly baked scones for morning tea, an eagerly awaited treat. His easy way and love of banter and a quip is already missed.

Although he did not join the committee, he was always full of ideas to improve the club and keen to see and follow up on grant opportunities. His pride in the club and desire to advertise its friendliness was clear in the way he was welcoming to all visitors and especially, with a kindred spirit, to caravanners, quickly establishing their caravanning life stories!

Away from the golf club Ian was deeply involved in other community activities, his church and keeping the council on their toes. We are all still shocked at his sudden departure but celebrate a life full of energy and that he was active until the last round of golf earlier in the day.
