This traditional yoga technique is called Padadhirasana. By placing the palms under the armpits and breathing slowly through the nose, the breath often feels clearer and the sensation of congestion begins to ease.
Like any yogic technique, the benefits come through regular practice. Stay with it for a few minutes at a time and notice how your breathing feels.

My guru, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, explains the connection between breath and emotion very simply.

When the mind is disturbed, the breath changes.
When the breath becomes calm and steady, the mind follows.

That is why pranayama is such an important part of yoga.

Long before terms like “breathwork” became popular, yogis understood that the breath directly influences the nervous system, emotions, energy, and mental clarity.

In yoga, we do not use the breath only to breathe better.
We use it to create balance within the body and mind.

That is the purpose of yogic breathing.

Busy day. Tight back. Overstimulated mind.
Put your legs up the wall for 2 minutes tonight.

This simple restorative yoga pose, Viparita Karani, helps relieve lower back tension, calm the nervous system, and ease tired or swollen legs before sleep.

Sometimes the most effective yoga practices are also the simplest.”

After teaching yoga for more than 25 years, I’ve come to appreciate more and more the importance of functional movement.

Yoga should not stay on the mat.
It should improve how you move through daily life.

Balance, coordination, stability, and body awareness become more important as we age.

Simple everyday tasks like putting your socks on standing on one leg can actually become balance training.

And this matters because balance is one of the first things we begin to lose with age.

Falls don’t suddenly start in old age.
They often start when balance training stops.

I’m curious… did you pass your age benchmark?

Modern wellness keeps rebranding practices yogis understood thousands of years ago.

Dhyana became mindfulness.
Pranayama became breathwork and vagal tone stimulation.

Different language. Same nervous system. Same human body.

Yoga was never just stretching. It was always about regulating the mind, breath, energy, and state of being.

The ocean changes your breathing without you even realising it.

The rhythm of the waves naturally slows the breath, which helps settle the nervous system and calm the body.

This is also why breath is such an important part of traditional yoga practice. The way you breathe can change the way you feel.

This is called Prana Mudra.

Bring the ring finger and pinky finger to touch the thumb while keeping the other two fingers extended.

In yoga, prana means life force energy. This mudra is traditionally used before meditation to create a calm but energised state.

I often practise it with slow Ujjayi breathing. Just sitting quietly for a few minutes, breathing deeply through the nose, can completely shift how scattered, flat, or mentally drained you feel.
