Today is the Winter Solstice.

The shortest day of the year.

A turning point.

I've spent months walking around my yard looking for somewhere that felt right to train.

Every spot seemed to have a reason not to work.

Too hot. Too many ants. Too uneven.

I don't know why I kept overlooking this beautiful tree.

Training beneath it today, I noticed the same angles I use in techniques repeated throughout its branches.

Three structural pathways.

Mind. Body. Spirit.

Roots anchored deep into the earth.

Branches forever reaching upward.

Existing.

Growing.

Adapting.

Perhaps that's why it finally felt right.

Today was our first Goju session together in karategi.

We do animal warm-ups. We play "Sensei Says". We hit the kick bag. We sit in seiza and practise belly breathing.

It isn't perfect. She gets excited. She gets distracted. We follow where her attention goes and gently bring it back.

At four years old, success isn't learning kata or refining technique.

Success is putting the uniform on willingly.

Looking forward to karate time.

Learning to bow respectfully.

Knowing where to stand.

Sitting in seiza for a little.

Throwing a few punches and kicks with confidence and a kiai.

Feeling proud of herself.

Everything else can come later.

For now, it's about familiarity. Making training a normal and enjoyable part of life. Building positive habits, one small session at a time.

If she finishes with a smile and wants to do it again tomorrow, that's enough.

The secret isn't talent.It's consistency.Showing up.Again.And again.And again.

Congratulations to Morio Higaonna Sensei on this well-deserved recognition.

A lifelong practitioner and teacher of Okinawan Goju-Ryu, his contribution to preserving and sharing the art across generations is deeply respected.

He is my Sensei’s Sensei, who trained under him through the 1970s and 80s at the Yoyogi dojo in Tokyo.

Im grateful to be part of this lineage.

This has to be one of my favourite training photos. Leaning in to check the shutter timing 😆 I don't have too many good photos with my Sensei and friend because we were always too busy training. So we gave it a crack and got this gem by mistake.
Middle: Sensei - Chief Instructor of TOGKA.
Right: Senpai Practioner and Japanese ink artist. You can see her calligraphy work 'bu' in the background of many Higaonna Sensei's TOGKF honbu dojo videos.

*Happy International Woman's Day 2025*
Never underestimate your inner strength and determination as a woman ✊🏼

This photo was taken a few years ago on my 35 year milestone in my martial arts journey. I have dabbled in a little bit of a lot of things over time. Judo, jujutsu, karate, muay thai, KAPAP, boxing, BJJ, Ryukyu kobujutsu.. but without doubt Okinawan goju ryu karate-do has been my passion.
I had envisioned acknowledging the year with focused training, maybe a seminar, opening a dojo again, or at least a photo shoot to capture peak physical condition in my early 40s. 😅
I never imagined the challenges the year presented me would be things I take for granted such as trying to walk and breath properly. At this stage of pregnancy I couldn't remember how to tie my belt properly, nor did it fit. It was an interesting lesson in what my body is capable of, and I look forward to the day I can be on a beach training with my daughter.

'Ten-tsuki' drill is practiced for improving speed, precision, and body alignment while honing control and balance. Practicing the sequence helps build muscle memory, breathing coordination, and posture, laying the groundwork for more advanced techniques. Focus on core stability and weight distribution, all while delivering powerful strikes with accuracy. It’s an excellent way to strengthen your core and embrace the Goju Ryu philosophy of blending hard and soft movements in harmony.

Title: Tekko
Medium: Japanese Ink on Gasenshi (bamboo paper)
This piece showcases a pair of tekko, intricately painted using traditional bamboo and hair brushes onto gasenshi bamboo paper. As a martial artist, I find that both disciplines offer a connection to discipline and creativity.

Sharing the foundational methodology and intricacies of Tekko, a traditional Okinawan weapon. Tekko is a natural extension for Okinawan karate practitioners, blending seamlessly into empty-hand close-quarter techniques. Initially, I thought the techniques would be obvious, but I found the focal points and strategy behind this weapon intriguing.
