SQUASH

Playing squash can have a number of positive health and fitness benefits on your body; Improves aerobic fitness, with more oxygen circulated around the body to better muscular endurance; Burns off calories with energy being supplied to the muscles and not forming fat; Boosting flexibility and sprint speed, due to the fast-paced nature of squash; Improves hand-eye co-ordination; Develops the strength and power of muscles, notably leg and arm muscles; Furthers concentration and mental strength, with matches often lasting for some time; Boosts a player's cardiovascular fitness (the heart and lungs organs), allowing more oxygen to be pumped around the body and help energise muscles. Squash is rated as healthiest sport in a survey conducted by the widely respected and influential US business magazine Forbes. While accepting that Health and Fitness are different things the magazine has compiled a list of the 10 healthiest sports. Rating for the different sports are based on consultations with fitness experts - coaches, personal trainers, competitor and exercise physiologists - as well as a dash of personal experience. Squash came out top of the 10 sports highlighted in the survey.

1. Squash
2. Rowing
3. Rock Climbing
4. Swimming
5. Cross-country Skiing
6. Basketball
7. Cycling
8. Running
9. Modern Pentathlon
10. Boxing

Forbes states that: "The preferred game of Wall Street has convenience on its side, as 30 minutes on the squash court provides an impressive cardio respiratory workout. Extended rallies and almost constant running builds muscular strength and endurance in the lower body, while lunges, twists and turns increase flexibility in the back and abdomen. For people just getting into the game, it's almost too much to sustain, but once you get there, squash is tremendous.”

VOLLEYBALL

Are you looking for good way to get some great exercise while having lots of fun with friends and/or family and developing a healthy sense of teamwork? Perhaps you haven’t been active for awhile and are looking for a good sport to get back into exercise? How about a sport that will increase your legs and upper body strength? A sport that has a mix of levels of intensity and doesn’t necessarily require much running around until you are ready to take it up a notch? Squashways Volleyball is a sport that is indoor, air-conditioned and under lights so it can’t be affected by the weather or the time of evening. While you have likely played Volleyball at some point in school or perhaps at a party or on a beach, you may have not played in so long that you have overlooked its fun and fitness potential as an addition to a healthy workout schedule.

The season will be 8 weeks plus finals. The fee per team for the season is $200 (same as last season). You can either e-mail me your nomination, pop in the courts and fill out a form, or even give me a ring down the courts – 47434379. If I am not there, please leave a message.

If you know anyone interested in playing in the volleyball season, can you please forward this email on.
