Starting horses under saddle is a simple process when done well. Producing horses that are confident, calm, obedient and well rounded is where we place extra importance. We want them well conditioned, well adjusted, and ready to go home and continue their journey to becoming an experienced riding horse.

Rehab isn’t always about legs and backs — sometimes it’s about emotions.

This horse has a long history of struggling in the cross ties. Anxiety would quickly escalate into pawing, pulling back, panic, and occasionally injuring himself trying to escape.

Before addressing the cross ties themselves, we made sure he understood some very clear ground rules: go means go, stop means stop, and in the absence of a cue, the answer is “park”.

Once those responses were reliable, we started building relaxation in the cross ties using clicker training. Rather than focusing on what we don’t want, we create opportunities to reinforce what we do want — calm standing, soft posture, and longer periods of relaxation.

If he paws, we have options. We can interrupt the behaviour with a simple backward step, or we can wait for a moment of stillness and reinforce that instead.

The goal isn’t just a horse that tolerates cross ties. It’s a horse that understands them, feels safe in them, and has the skills to regulate his own behaviour.

Training changes behaviour. Understanding changes emotions. The best results usually come from both. ✨🐴
