It is a social leveller, open to all ages, gender and skill level. A game plays out like soccer mixed with netball and NFL, with a field of 100m in total, which contains 2 shorter end zones. The offense team needs to catch a disc in the defense’s endzone to score a goal/point. The disc is thrown in any direction between players, moving towards the end zone. When the disc is caught the player must
stop and quickly pass to keep play moving. A dropped disc forces a turnover and the play swaps to the other team. Plays can be defended, intercepted or outrun. Discs are generally 175 grams and can be purchased in South Australia, interstate or overseas. Ideally, a Discraft disc is sought after, having a more flat shape and better mould than other brands. The fact that it is non-contact means it opens the sport up to a wider range of players, although with dives, jumps and collisions there can still be a few sore muscles the next day, like with many sports. There is a lot of running, so it's great for cardio and could be considered by individuals who want to keep up their fitness between seasons. Ultimate is a social sport and a lot of fun. While official leagues exist and ultimate is played competitively at a local, state, national and international level, there is also the pick up game or just throwing a disc between one another for practice. Southern Hills Ultimate has started up with throws/pick ups and generate interest in the sport in the Adelaide Hills and Southern areas. Sessions are held at either Mt Barker or Strathalbyn depending on where we get a field with lights. Ideally a summer game, Southern Hill Ultimate will endeavour to continue on through the winter, keep skills up and recruit more players.
