In the last two weeks we have had face to face meetings with 4 councillors, we are still waiting for replies to our requests to meet others. It is very apparent that the decision to build in Mittagong was made in good faith but ill-informed. We have presented the facts and, hopefully, we have raised some doubt. Maybe it will be raised at their next strategy meeting in October. If you think you, or your club, will benefit from a Multipurpose Indoor Sports centre in Moss Vale, with about 15000 new residents in the next 10 or 15 years within 15 mins travel, write to the Councillors at [email protected]. I ran the question of Moss Vale or Mittagong as the site for the Indoor Sports Centre on Highlands Opinion and here a couple of days ago. Although the number of replies was somewhat disappointing the ratio of opinions was over 25 to 1 in favour of Moss Vale! Come on WSC does public opinion matter or not?

Councillor Sara Moylan has alerted us to a report that Minister Paul Scully, Planning and Public Space, has a strategic plan on public exhibition for the Illawarra, Shoalhaven and Wingecarribee development that recognises Moss Vale as an Emerging Major Centre, over that of Bowral and Mittagong. Businesses like Hungry Jacks and Woolworths have been approved to proceed. The Woolworths court case, opposed by WSC, came at a significant cost to the rate payer. Darraby and Ashbourne extensions have been approved by WSC, and there is still significant focus on Bowral south development. Still WSC can't see the forest for the trees and intend on building indoor sports centre in Mittagong. Communications with councillors has gone silent even though Clrs Duffy, Smith and Foley all say they will follow up and get back to me. Trust takes another hit. We need a rescission motion and we have plenty of information to support it but Councillors don't want to talk.

Invest in local applicable knowledge.
A giant 🚢 ship's engine broke down and no one could repair it, so they hired a Mechanical Engineer with over 30 years of experience. ⚙️
He inspected the engine very carefully, from top to bottom. After seeing everything, the engineer unloaded his bag and pulled out a small hammer.
He knocked something gently. Soon, the engine came to life again. The engine has been fixed!
A week later the engineer mentioned to the ship owner that the total cost of repairing the giant ship was $20,000. 💰
"What?!" said the owner. “You did almost nothing. Give us a detailed bill."
The Engineer replied him “The answer is simple:”

Know where to knock and how much to knock: $19,998. 💰
The importance of appreciating one's expertise and experience...🙌 because those are the results of struggles, experiments and even tears..😭💪

Bearing in mind Clr Nicole Smith's recent campaign to "ASK MORE QUESTIONS" we have invited all the Councillors to meet our team, face to face, so we can both ask more questions on the future of indoor sport in the Highlands. Maybe we can both learn some things that haven't been bought to the table by staff and consultants and restricted by public presentations protocols. Always happy to discuss and negotiate.

I have emailed Councillors and staff a number of questions in relation to the site selection process. Rachel, Sara, Erin and Tessa committed to follow up. Time will tell. The formation of a finance committee is interesting as the Mittagong option is a potential fiscal disaster. Still no idea who is lobbying for Mittagong, maybe Viv?

Interesting discussion in our team the other day, only 1 elected council ago we could have face to face meetings with staff, GM, Councillors to discuss issues on a major community project like ours. Today we deal in emails, partial answers to questions or none at all, consultants who have no local knowledge and or no knowledge of the issue at hand but can present a response to council when councillors only hear the consultants version of the story, locals know the truth or have a lot of the local knowledge but knowledge left unheard. "Open and transparent, send us an email" say Councillors only to be redirected down the ladder to only get the company line, from staff who have made a commitment to leadership. Public opinion matters until there is a disagreement or public opinion left unheard. We need some of the elected representatives to have the courage to debate and make decisions that may not match the company line.

Take a moment one day and have a look at Frensham Sporting Hub. This could be a wonderful community asset, or a design basis for one elsewhere. I don't know if Frensham are interested in a commercial agreement with council, but council don't know either because I don't think council have ever asked? An income for the school, an asset to the community and saving to the rate payer. Winner. At least ask?
