We all know that increasing muscle mass nearly always comes with an increase in Strength, but why?
I believe that when you increase the amount of muscle on your frame, what you are mostly increasing is your Maximum Strength Potential or the maximum amount of load you can lift in general.
For myself, at a current weight of 83kg, I don't think I am anywhere near my Strength Potential, whatever that may be. I could easily get stuck on the 'Gain Train', spending energy trying to increase my muscle mass to help my overall goal of maximising strength. But I feel that, for myself, I would much rather direct my efforts into the skill of lifting heavy things.
As I reach closer to what I arbitrarily feel is my maximum potential, I will most likely change my focus, and I feel at that point that growing quality mass will be a slightly easier process.
I'm playing the long game
