I’ve always found all different types of exercising cathartic.
I’m not ashamed to say that I hate body weight exercises, I’m not the biggest fan of cardio either. I feel much more comfortable picking up something heavy, or throwing some kettlebells around – the Olympic lifts are definitely my forte. The combination of power & explosiveness and skill & precision just seems to really suit me.
I think it’s really important to try & do things that are out of your comfort zone, to work on your weaknesses and not just focus on your strengths. I think that’s why I enjoy the classes at Be Strong – there’s pretty much always some part of the workout that’s going to be enjoyable and some part that’s going to be challenging. No two work-outs are the same and there’s always going to be some aspect of the workout that suits you, and some portion that will test you.
Recently I’ve been trying to make being fitter & healthier more of a priority in my life. I’ve got two young kids, and setting an example for them of how a healthy person looks and acts is really important to try and help them grow up to be healthy people themselves.
Now granted, exercise is only one part of that, but watching them fall in love with sports, or get excited about going for a run or waking up to them doing yoga in the living room is really gratifying. It’s good to know that steps I’m taking to try & improve myself are also setting an example for my kids as well.
Probably the best piece of advice for someone who is just starting out or maybe struggling a bit is to find a way to make working out fun. I’ve tried doing plenty of things that I’ve hated, all in the name of being fitter & healthier, and I haven’t stuck with any of them.
There’s so many different ways that you can exercise, but if you dislike doing it, you’re not going to stick with it for the long haul, no matter how hard you try. Work out with a friend or try a new class - find something that you enjoy doing and then you’ll do it more often. And if you’re doing it consistently, then you’ll see results, and you’ll want to do it even more.
