Moruya River.
The look of the weekend’s forecast, depending on which app you use, doesn’t offer the most encouraging outlook. With winds we had last night, the really warm overcast gloomy day we are having now, rain feels like it is definitely on the cards.
The warm currents we have had up until now, have headed back north, allowing for a drop in water temps to take their place. Ocean temps have dropped to 17-18deg, with more cooler water building up south of the border. Expect the fish activity in the rivers to start to slow quickly.
As I reported last week, fish deep, fish slow, and add scent or burley to your routine to maximise your chances at finding a winter fish.

The lower sections around Preddy’s wharf have been experiencing a few tailor and salmon schools moving into the river on a rising tide. These are a lot of fun on light gear. Tie on a 5-10gm metal, and cast into working fish for some fun. Flesh baits will tempt working fish also, try pilchards or mullet fillet.

The further upstream you move, the colder the water temps are getting, the slower the fish activity is becoming. Metal vibes fished deep, or baits worked slowly, will be one way to locate and try and tempt shut down fish.

Tuross River.
salmon have seen coming in and out of the system this week, creating heaps of opportunities for light tackle fun. Small metals or lightly weighted flesh baits will get the bite, and you never know what may be sitting under neath the schools.
An incoming tide will offer a better than average chance at finding a healthy flathead this system is well know for, while the deeper holes will be holding estuary perch, bream and possibly a mulloway.

Get out and make the most of whatever the weekend offers.

Rock and beach.
The salmon have be thick on the beaches this week, locating the schools has been the trick. But when found, a fish a cast is highly likely.
Now that the water temps are starting to drop, the Drummer gear is getting dusted off in my shed. Fresh leaders and hooks are on the list of things to do this weekend, along with clearing up the summer gear off of the back seat of the car. Time to gear up for winter species.

Offshore.
There have been plenty of snapper being reported this week, screen shots of sounders sent to me this week, are showing good fish in deaths from 15-25m of water. Try shallow first before moving over fish to head out deeper.

The bait freezer has just been restocked, so we are now fully stocked with all the usual baits for your weekend fishing activities. Come in and have a look today.

We still have 50% off all Nomad Live Ops soft plastics, 30% of all summer Shimano T-Shirts, and 20% off MSRP on all Shimano reels.

Stay safe everyone and remember, “ Every day’s a good day for fishing… “

Moruya River.
The difference between the ocean temps and the river temps at the moment is about 5 deg. The river is running at approximately 13 deg, while the ocean is around 18 deg. This will make the lower sections of the river, on an incoming tide, the best option this weekend. The rest of the river is going to be slow, fish activity wise. Bait in conjunction with burley, or lures with a smear of scent are going to be two options to try and get a bite from shut down fish. Metal or soft vibes in small sizes, fished deep and with slow hops and lots of pauses, can help to get bites from fish that are saying yeah-nah more than hell-yeah.
Try in areas like the spur wall, Preddy’s wharf, back of the hole in the wall and around the quarry wharf for a good chance at finding fish.
Keep an eye out for bait schools busting up, as tailor or salmon are probably giving them a hard time. You will need to be quick on the cast, as this action is usually pretty short lived.

Tuross River.
With lower river temps, the Luderick crews will be starting to look for green w**d. This system at times can hold good concentrations of green w**d eating luderick. The lower water temps also get the estuary perch fired up, as the start to move into spawning mode. Just remember the May-August is a closed season for taking EP’s, so any caught fish need to be returned to the water straight away.

The lower sections of the river, on an incoming tide, will be the best chance at finding a flathead or bream this weekend. The warmer ocean temps can be a catalyst to fish activity.

Rock and Beach.
Salmon are the big ticket species on the beach at the moment, and there are plenty of them around up and down the coast. Pilchards on gang hooks or metals cast and retrieved at passing schools is your best option. There does appear to be a spike in swell and wave intervals for the weekend, so if the breakwall or local rock platforms are your preferred locations, please keep an eye on the ocean. Stay safe, no fish is worth a swim.

Offshore.
I am hearing good reports from the bottom bouncing crews of good snapper still around the 50m depth, but as that water temp drops, we can expect to see fish move into shallower depths. Flathead are also readily available on most sand patches that sit alongside reef edges.

The bait freezer is looking a little depleted this week, with Hawksbury prawn having sold out, and limited supply of salted 1kg Pilchards in stock. For the most, everything else is still available.

Stay safe everyone and remember, “Everyday’s a good day for fishing…”

Moruya River.
River temps have, as a result of lasts weeks rains dropped a fair bit. Ocean temps however, are still warm. A few tide cycles will see the river temps increase, as the warm ocean currents replace cold run off from last weeks rain. Ocean currents are starting to swirl around, and the warm water we have been experiencing, is starting to retreat north, allowing the colder southern currents to start to take over. We can expect this to start happening fairly quickly, as we move further into June.
Fish activity in the river is going to start to decrease, and a more winter mind set is going to be needed to find and tempt fish. Fish slow, fish deep. Burley will definitely be your friend.
If lure fishing is your go to technique, scale your offerings down. 2.5” soft plastic grubs or minnows and metal or soft vibe style lures, should be starting to make their way to the top levels of your tackle box.
As the water temps drop, fish will retreat from the cooler exposed sand flats, to the relatively warmer deeper holes, hence the metal vibes. Fish slow because a fishes activity has a lot to do with its metabolism. Cold water slows the metabolism, making them less active. You are starting to look for a reactive bite, rather than the active aggression we see over summer.
Winter can still produce fish, if you are able to pivot, and fish the prevailing conditions.
Look for the deeper holes, make the most of the relatively warmer water coming into a system, particularly after rain. Slow your retrieve rates down, so fish can react to your presentation, and keep casting in the same areas more than you would during the warmer months as fish need to be annoyed into biting when they are shut down.

Tuross river.
I have reports that some parts of Tuross have dropped to 14 deg as a result of last weeks rains. A big difference of the 19-20 deg waters we had before the rains. We can expect this trend to continue as the warmer summer currents retreat north, and the the cooler water from down south take over.
The cool change does from time to time bring cool water species to the fore, salmon for one, are a lot fun to target on light gear when the enter a system like Tuross.
The change from summer to winter fish activity is not all doom and gloom, pivot your expectations, expect to work a little harder for your catches, and celebrate a hard earned capture when it does come your way.

Rock and Beach.
I personally, am waiting for those cold currents to push-up the coast and bring my favourite rock species, the drummer, back to the plate. This hard fighting species is very high on my favourite land based targets, and cold waters are their preferred time of the year. Some bread burley and a good packet of Hawksbury prawns are my go to when I’m chasing a feed of drummer. Soak the bread in 1/3 to a 1/4 bucket of water, peel your prawn baits, add the shells to the bread and water mix and start to slowly and sparingly throw a hand full into the wash zone you are fishing every few minutes. I like to add my bait to the mix just as I add another bit of burley. Hang on, as drummer hit hard and fast, and will try to get home before you have a chance to react. Once you have them turned, don’t relax, as they will take any opportunity to brick you, if you given the chance. Bust offs are par for the course, so make sure you are well stocked on solid hooks, small ball sinkers and good leader material. I tend to fish pretty light, 15-20lb fluro carbon leader is my preference and a 9’ med light action rod for the fun of it.
You can of course fish heavier, this can slow the bite down a bit however.

Salmon on the beaches will become the main stay of any winter beach or breakwall session. Pilchard on gang hooks, or any metal cast and retrieved through a school will see some love. Keep an eye out for suspicious black masses moving up and down the beach, these will be salmon schools, and they bring a smile to those that like some no stop beach action.

Offshore.
Snapper will be returning to the top of the target list, as water temps drop. Winter brings in some big reds every year, as the move into the shallows to chase the cuttlefish spawn run. Once the cuttlefish spawn they die, leaving a free for all feeding feeding event as snapper openly feed on dead and floating cuttlefish on the surface, often within casting range of many local rock platorms. The ledges north of the bay have a better reputation with the snapper fishos, as the cuttlefish prefer the terrain these areas offer.
They will also be readily available over the shallow reefs in as little as 5-10m of water.

The bait freezer has been restocked, both Hawksbury prawns and 1kg salted pilchards are back in stock, just in time for the long weekend.

Remember, we are offering 20% off all Shimano reels as standard now, so if you are chasing something in particular, come and have a chat with us.

Do you know we have an upstairs section? Soo many people regularly remark, that after 21 years they didn’t know we did. We have a good range of camping and marine gear upstairs, so next time you are in, go upstairs and check out what we have available.

Moruya River.
We had a good bit of rain this week, so we can expect that the river will have some degree of colour to it for the weekend. The fresh coming out of the hills will drop the water temps up the river, and slow activity a bit.
I would be looking towards the lower front sections of the river this weekend. Try around Preddy’s Wharf the back of the hole in the wall, the spur wall and the airport flats when looking for warmer waters. The incoming tide will tip the temps in your favour, as the ocean temps are still around 20deg.
If you are going to be trying up around the town bridge, start to look at the deeper drop offs, the fish will tend to be hanging around deep, under the fresh layer that will be on top. Deep diving hard body lures, metal vibes or soft plastics with a bit of head weight will be the better artificial options. You can’t go past a well presented bait also. Mullet fillet is a great hardy bait with a high oil content, that will attract most estuary species.

Tuross River.
I have been getting good reports of visiting salmon within the Tuross system this week, so if you want to have a bit of light tackle fun, some small metals and a 2-4kg rod with give you those reels screaming runs we all look forward to hearing this weekend. Try down towards the front of the system on an incoming tide. Fingers crossed they will still be there for the weekend.
Tuross will have had the same amount of rain that Moruya had earlier in the week, and as such there will be a bit of colour running out as a result. If the run out tide coincides with your session, then fish the deeper holes to try and find a bream or flathead.
The further upstream you go, the higher the chance of encountering dirtier waters. So the lower sections will be the best place to look.
Again, mullet fillet baits, will be the better option with a bit of colour in the river.

Rock and Beach.
Dyquon, his brother Arlonzo, mum and weekend manager Bo had a great session on the beach a few nights ago, landing many good sized trevally, some salmon and tailor.
The salmon are around in good numbers, along with some good tailor. The bus swells we had earlier in the week, have moved a lot of sand around, so finding a good deep clean gutter, may require a bit more work than usual.
Reports of a mulloway or two from the Moruya breakwall have also come into the shop late this week. No massive fish, with 75cm being the reported size, still a lot of fun.
With the swell dropping this weekend, it could be a good place to look for a salmon, tailor or even a mulloway if you are really lucky.

Offshore.
The swell this week, has kept the offshore reports to a minimum, but the weekend is not looking too bad. After a big swell the local reefs have a bit of a stir up, which can trigger the snapper to bite. Keep an eye on the forecast and conditions if you are planning on getting out this weekend.

We had a restock of the bait freezer this week, Hawksbury Prawns and 1kg Salted Pilchards are both no shows unfortunately. Fingers crossed they will be available next time the bait truck comes through.

If you are looking at a new reel for your range, we are now offering a standard 20% discount on all reels from Shimano. Do if there is something you are after, come in and have a chat with us.

I would just like to wish boss lady Gaye, the happiest of birthdays this week.

Moruya River.
While there is rain forecast for the weekend “technically”, there isn’t any real rain forecast until next week. Get out and make the most of the warm waters while it lasts. Water temps in Moruya are sitting around the 19-20deg making the river, often warmer than the current air temps. The fish are still active as a result. Bream and flathead, as well as a few travelling salmon are available around the Preddy’s wharf area and the spur wall. While upstream, the flats under the town bridge are still holding good concentrations of bait, which means the bream and flathead will also be close by. Quarry wharf is also producing bream, flathead and the odd trevally and small mulloway around the deeper holes and granite boulders around this area.
The further upstream you head however, the water temps will start to drop off, as the warm water pushing is over rider by cooler waters from up in the fresh.
The bass season is pretty much over as a result. You still can tackle with a fish or two during the cooler months, but most dedicated bass anglers, tend to leave them alone to spawn during the cooler months of the year.

Tuross River.
Flathead, bream, passing salmon and the odd mulloway are still being encountered in this epic system this week. Flathead, as usual, are the stand out species for the Tuross system, and there are plenty of 1m potential fish still active. Live baits of poddy mullet are probably one of the best big flathead baits around, and account for some good sized flatty every year, as well as the odd mulloway.
Once that cool water pushes up from down south, expect to see a few more salmon pushing into the river, for some light tackle fun.

Rock and Beach.
Salmon and tailor have been the main draw card on the beaches of the south coast this week, with big black salmon stretching the limits of some anglers tackle. Sharks and several mulloway have also been encountered lurking under and around the mullet schools that are still hanging around along the coast. For the sharks, a good heavy wire trace and a nice fresh salmon or tailor fillet will entice one to bite.
Bo and Dyquon managed one the biggest Wobbygong sharks we have ever seen off the beach earlier in the week. This fish was longer than Dyquon is tall.

Offshore.
Snapper & flathead have been the main stay of inshore action this week, with swells under 2m today and tomorrow, building to 2m+ fir Sunday, Saturday is looking like the better of the two days to get out. Always check the weather reports before heading out, and if you think it’s beyond your capabilities, stay in the river.

The bait freezer is looking a bit worse for wear, with Tw**d Bait on limited deliveries now as winter approaches. I will hopefully be able to secure a top up next week.

Stay safe everyone and remember, “Every days a good day for fishing…”
