Not all saddle trees are built the same, and the difference comes down to where the tree points land on the horse.

English, Italian, Argentinian, and French trees all follow a similar conventional design with tree points sitting directly over the trapezius muscle.

The StrideFree® tree moves those contact points away from the trapezius allowing the shoulder to rotate freely, the back to stay soft, and the horse to move without restriction.

👉 How has your StrideFree® saddle made a difference to you and your horse? We want to hear from you.

We have great news for our Mornington Peninsula clients. Rhiannon Schiffer is our newest PHS Certified Saddle Fitter who can look after you and your horses.

The Peninsula was home for a long time before we moved to Beechworth. We still get down that way, though visiting isn't the same as having someone local, and plenty of those clients have been with us for decades. That's why we wanted a dedicated fitter based in the area.

Rhiannon has been around horses her entire life, in both equestrian and racing, and she trained in depth with Peter and Rhys before taking this on.

Beginning September 1st, she'll be covering Mornington Peninsula, Cranbourne, Pearcedale, the Yarra Valley, and Pakenham, and (on demand) towards Phillip Island.

For bookings, please call 0424 007 107 or email [email protected].

When we discuss saddles of any type, there usually follows a conversation about the saddle tree. The StrideFree® tree has been designed to allow complete freedom of the horse's shoulder movement, allowing a lengthened stride and more comfort when in motion.

The horse's forelimbs are attached by a false joint. Only soft tissue structures, muscles and fascia, hold the forelimbs to the trunk because horses lack a collarbone. Any restriction of those structures can impede full range of motion through extension and retraction of the limb.

The top portion of the scapula is a cartilage cap, and the thin trapezius muscle, which has both a cervical and thoracic portion, plays a role in forelimb attachment and movement and houses sensitive nerves. When triggered, these can cause a hollowing of the back and raising of the head, as well as pain in the surrounding area and behavioural or training problems.

Your common half trees and full trees, whether steel or wood, hang on to this area, directly affecting the spine and nerves, causing pain and influencing performance.

The upper portion of the horse's scapula includes a flexible cartilage extension, and muscles such as the trapezius lie beneath the saddle. These tissues are involved in supporting and moving the forelimb and can become sensitive if subjected to excessive or poorly distributed pressure.

Research has shown that saddle fit can influence pressure distribution, comfort and performance, highlighting the importance of choosing a saddle that is appropriate for the individual horse.

The StrideFree® tree has been developed with these principles in mind. By seeking to minimise interference around the shoulder region and support even weight distribution, it aims to provide a comfortable fit that allows horses to move as freely as possible. As with any saddle, correct fit for the individual horse remains the key to comfort and performance.

PHS jumping saddles are built on the StrideFree® tree for complete shoulder freedom, with a forward cut flap, narrow twist, and close contact construction so the rider can move with the horse rather than against it. Knee blocks are available in various sizes and can be adjusted onsite by a PHS Certified Saddle Fitter as the rider's position develops.

Our saddles are custom made to order in various colours and your choice of welting and stitching. 10-12 week lead time.

Visit StrideFreeSaddles.com.au to see our entire range of saddles from jumping to endurance and everything in between.
