Well what a fabulous day we had today at our annual Social Syndicates Raceday event.
It was always going to be a good day, but what turns a good day into a legendary day is having one of our Social Syndicate horses win in front of such a vast and enthusiastic audience.
It's not often a horse wins at its first race start but today it was Doubtland Diva's turn to do just that. Everyone knew she had plenty of pace ahead of the race, but when you are up against expensive unraced horses from big stables you never quite know what you are facing.
Suzy was a little awkwardly away but railed up to take the lead soon after and was never headed to win convincingly, at which point the racecourse just erupted. It was fantastic. We have a terrific mix of owners in this filly - a number of our regulars and always good to see them get a good horse, but a considerable number of first timers who must already think this caper is pretty easy. What all these owners do have in common is the ability to make a truckload of noise in the last 300 metres of a race.
Well done to Tony and the team for being able to successfully target an event at our Annual Raceday (and with a Vobis Bonus too) for her first up run, and great to see Jake grab Social Syndicates another winner
Mystic Vamp resumed in our sponsored race at a distance short of her best, but given how well she had performed first up at Mornington earlier in the year, we had our fingers crossed she could get home from the back and into the money. There was a huge late move in the betting for her too - from $15 10 mins before start time to $7. That's a lot of $5 bets from our owners! She did finish the race off nicely to finish midfield, just running out of puff in the last 100m. All being well her distances will extend from here and she will be back in the winners circle soon.
As for the Raceday function - what a beauty. We had a few issues with the sound system and apologies to those who couldn't hear Tony or myself from time to time, but apart from that I think it went splendidly if I say so myself.
Thanks as always to Emily, Mel and everybody else at Mornington, especially the kitchen and wait staff who did a wonderful job; thanks again to our great supporters at Steeples and Kirks Hotel on the Esplanade who again gave us a series of gift vouchers for prizes, also to our owner Sandy Ashton (San Silversmith) who again offered us two of her hand made jewellery prizes - head to her instagram page to see more; thanks to regular photographer Andrea from PCWS Syndicate and to a new photographer in George from the Breeze in Point Lonsdale for grabbing me some snaps from around the traps
And thank you to all our Social Syndicate Owners and Managers who got behind the event again - we don't have an event (or horses) without your support.
Congratulations to all our prizewinners in the Fashions on the Field with Annie Ratcliffe from Bound to Win taking the chocolates from Katherine McCoy and Laurel Mott in the Ladies.
In the Mens Paul Levins was the winner in top hat and tails (may not have been his idea!), from Dickson Dalgleish and Michael Julian
Karen Winter won the quiz prize when she correctly guessed the knockout question about the size of the steak on today's menu!
All the best - JOHN
