Lassies through to the Quarter Finals!

With all the men’s teams knocked out of the cup it was all eyes on the Lassies as they took on Brooklands in the round of 16 of the Womens Metropolitan Cup at Elstead reserve.

With many of the gents staying back from the Intra-Club game in which Team Osunwa destroyed Team Dodsworth (but that’s another story) there was an electric atmosphere as the anticipation built and the lassies did not disappoint with a 13 goal thriller.

If you can call a 10-3 win thrilling…which we can with the quality of the goals on display!

Louise Porter opened the scoring with a deft header before going on to add another seconds later after dancing past several defenders and fooling the keeper with a clever finish.

Deena Hinedi put away a Maria Browne cross five minutes later with a driven volley to extend the lead to 3-0 within 15 minutes.

Browne got in on the goal scoring act herself with a peach of a goal before being denied her second by the upright. But as all good strikers should Porter followed up to claim her hat-trick and officially open the flood gates.

Porter has scored so many goals this season that we’ve had to restart the counter but we can safely say that this was her 5th to 10th hat-trick of the season.

And speaking after the game Porter was pleased with the result and the development of the side.

“We’re excited for Quarter-Finals.” She said.

“Its crazy there a lot of girls who hadn’t played [club] soccer before but just the way everyone is coming together especially the way we play our games with passing its cool.”

“It obviously nice to score six goals but I’m more happy about the way we played as a team today.”

“We still have a lot to work on but its all been positive.”

Porter got her fourth after Wee Em Cansell played her through before the loudest cheer of the after happened as Brooklands scored from the penalty spot. We still love you though Navina!

Porter added two more for a double hat-trick. Let me type that out again. A DOUBLE HAT-TRICK.

Brooklands added two more goals while Browne claimed her second and coach Ange Grehan tucked away a penalty to put aside her last penalty crashing off the cross bar!

The Lassies have been drawn against East Fremantle SC from Division 1 and will be played on the 4th of August at Wauhop Park and we wish them all the best!

We're about to kick off the season today and we sat down to with Coach Angela Grehan. Well we didn’t actually sit down and speak as she’s currently in Scotland but you know what we mean!

Like many of us at Backpackers FC Ange’s is a familiar story. A simple holiday in Perth from bonny Scotland led to her falling for the pervasive whispers of Neil BackpackersFC and taking up a role as player coach for the upcoming season.

“I was extremely impressed by the set up and the passion at Backpackers FC from the ladies and the men’s.” Grehan said.
It was this passion that inspired Ange to make arrangements for a second stint in Perth despite some difficulties at the start with many of the ladies absent through various circumstances.

But all that has changed and results in the preseason suggest a chance at even more success.

“Since I’ve been away Neil has been keeping me fully updated with the progress of the girls during the preseason and I’ve been really impressed too and truly excited about leading the ladies into Division 4.”

“The main focus is to get the most success we can get from Division 4 and the cup and I strongly believe we have a very good chance on both challenges.”

The preseason has seen an influx of old and new faces with key names from last season absent or on their way back from travelling but as always new faces have arrived.

“We have a great bunch of girls in the team with a lot of talent and potential and if the girls keep working hard at training then the success will follow naturally on Sunday.”

Despite being at the other side of world as the ladies kick off their season Grehan has one last message for the team talk.

“TEAM= Together Everyone Achieves More! BRING IT ON!”

Some new faces amongst the ladies last night! We are still hoping to find a few more though!
