🥋 WING CHUN KUNG FU | Practical Self-Protection

It’s not always about being bigger or stronger — it’s about learning how to use timing, positioning, movement and leverage.

In this short Wing Chun sequence, we work from an incoming hook punch — jamming the attack, changing the angle and moving underneath to take the back, establish control, disrupt balance and transition into a takedown and controlled ground position.

Techniques aren’t one-size-fits-all. We learn to adapt movement to the individual, the situation and the person in front of us.

At Phoenix Rising Martial Arts, our focus is awareness and avoidance where possible, practical protection when necessary, and developing the skills and confidence to create an opportunity to get to safety.

🥋 How do children learn to recognise an incoming strike?

It begins by building timing, focus, hand–eye coordination and centreline awareness through controlled partner practice.

In this traditional Wing Chun drill, one student performs circling chain punches while the other responds with a sequence of alternating hand techniques to protect the centreline.

This is just one of the foundational drills our students learn. From here, we gradually introduce footwork, movement and practical partner scenarios—helping children develop controlled responses, confidence and personal-protection skills.

WHEN A BULLY GETS PHYSICAL… 🥋

This drill was created around a real bullying situation a young student was experiencing at school.

After being pushed to the ground, he gets back to his feet — but the attack continues.

👊 As the first punch comes in, he uses an inside high Gaan Sau to protect himself while responding immediately to disrupt the attack.

👊 When the second punch follows, he protects the inside line again, controls the attacking arm and responds to stop the continued assault and create an opportunity to get away.

This isn’t about teaching kids to fight.

It’s about teaching them to BLOCK • PROTECT • RESPOND — staying composed under pressure, protecting themselves and knowing what to do when simply walking away is no longer an option.

We can’t always control another person’s actions, but we can give our kids the confidence, awareness and skills to protect themselves. 💪🥋

🥋 ELBOW DEFENCE — BLOCK • CONTROL • REDIRECT

Defending an elbow isn’t just about stopping the strike — maintaining control is what creates your next opportunity.

This drill works on receiving and controlling the incoming elbow, transitioning underneath to redirect the arm, and maintaining contact as both partners continue the exchange.

From the same control, we can also transition to the wrist and elbow to create an arm lock to a possible takedown.

It’s a simple drill with plenty happening — timing, coordination, reaction, control and learning how to move from defence into a counter.

Block it. Control it. Redirect it. Counter. 🥋
