RIP Dory Funk Jr, who passed away on 4 August 2026, aged 85. A true craftsman of the ring, Funk Jr leaves behind one of the most respected legacies in professional wrestling.

Dory first toured Australia in 1965 and 1967, sharpening his skills and building the foundation of the calm, technically brilliant style he became known for. In 1969, he defeated tough Gene Kiniski to capture the prestigious NWA World Heavyweight Championship, a title he held from 1969 to 1973. One of the longest and most admired reigns in the NWA belt’s history.

He returned to Australia for a short tour in 1977, and again in 1986. Funk Jr was a quiet cowboy whose wrestling spoke louder than his words. His matches with Jack Brisco remain timeless classics, showcasing pure, disciplined wrestling at its peak.

Born into one of wrestling’s great families, Dory Funk Sr and Terry Funk were both hugely successful in their own right. Dory Jr and Terry remain the only brothers to have both held the NWA World title, a remarkable achievement. Later in their careers, the Funk brothers found major success as a tag team, particularly in Japan, where their toughness and authenticity made them icons.

Dory Funk Jr wrestled from 1963 to 2008, with a few appearances even after that. An extraordinary span by any measure. Funk Jr had his last match in 2017! He also proudly operated the Funking Conservatory and Funk Dojo, wrestling school's that helped launch the careers of many future stars.

A technician, a teacher, and a gentleman of the sport, Dory Funk Jr’s had a major influence on wrestling.

Note: Ric Flair is now considered the last surviving traditional/travelling, true NWA World Heavyweight Champion (from back when the NWA title was considered a major title).

Thanks to Rob for this picture of Jack Little and a benefit ticket. Jack Little was an American who came to Australia in 1952 and never left. Jack had a background in radio, he had a booming voice with a gravelly American accent. He was perfect for the role of host and commentator of World Championship Wrestling in the early years. Jack played a big role in World Championship Wrestling becoming the success it did. Jack Little passed away in 4th January 1986.

RIP Max Amata Taogaga, known to wrestling fans as Max Tamboola during his time in World Championship Wrestling. He passed away on 16 July 2026, aged 77.

Max began his wrestling career in 1974 in New Zealand, training under two major figures in Polynesian wrestling history, Steve Rickard and Peter Maivia. He later wrestled in Australia throughout 1977 and 1978.

Over the years he adopted several ring names — Sivi Afi, Siva Afi, and Superfly Afi. From 1986 to 1988, he competed in the WWF, reaching a global audience and cementing his place in the international wrestling scene.

Across a 23‑year career, Max Taogaga travelled the world, showcasing Polynesian pride, athleticism, and showmanship. His legacy lives on through the many fans and fellow wrestlers he inspired.

Australian wrestler and bodybuilder Paul Graham sadly passed away on 8th May 2026, aged 86. Paul was a prominent figure in Australian strength sports, remembered for his contributions to both professional wrestling and bodybuilding.

During the 1960s and 1970s, Paul Graham wrestled for World Championship Wrestling, often appearing as a special attraction thanks to his impressive and muscular physique. He mostly wrestled part‑time, and he also became well known for his strongman performances throughout the 1970s, several of which drew media attention.

Bodybuilding, however, was Paul’s true passion. He became a promoter and played a major role in bringing elite bodybuilding to Australia. Most notably, he organised the 1980 Mr. Olympia contest in Sydney—one of the most prestigious events in the sport. Paul was deeply connected within the bodybuilding community and counted many legends among his friends. Arnold Schwarzenegger even served as best man at his wedding.

Paul Graham leaves behind a legacy of dedication, showmanship, and unwavering love for the world of strength sports. His impact on Australian wrestling and particularly bodybuilding will not be forgotten.

Lawrence Robert Shreve, also known as the madman from the Sudan, but better known as Abdullah The Butcher turned 85 years old on 11th January. He wrestled in Australia during 1973 and 1974. Happy Birthday to Abdullah The Butcher.
