Cardiovascular training is about more than fitness. It supports your heart, energy, strength and overall quality of life.

Regular aerobic exercise may help improve sleep quality, support healthy blood pressure, reduce stress, improve body composition and contribute to better cholesterol and triglyceride levels. It may also help lower the risk of long-term health conditions such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke.

There are many ways to get started, including hydrotherapy, cycling, rowing, walking, running, skipping and boxing. The best option is the one you can enjoy, repeat and build into your routine.

Movement is medicine — and small, consistent steps can make a real difference.

Why Stretching Deserves A Place In Your Weekly Routine!

The human body has over 650 muscles, 4000 tendons, 900 ligaments and 200 bones. It is, by design, built to move. And one of the simplest ways to keep it moving well is something most of us don’t do nearly enough of.

Regular stretching supports better balance and posture, and research suggests it can reduce the risk of chronic conditions including heart disease, type 2 diabetes and musculoskeletal injuries by up to 50 per cent. That’s a significant return for something that requires no equipment and very little time.

When muscles aren’t regularly worked through their range of motion they begin to contract, becoming shorter and tighter over time. That gradual tightening is behind a lot of the stiffness and reduced mobility that people assume is simply part of getting older. In many cases it isn’t. It’s just a lack of consistent movement. The good news is that it doesn’t have to be complicated or time consuming. A few minutes of deliberate movement, done consistently, is enough to make a real difference.

At Healthways we know that starting something new can feel daunting, which is why we try to make stretching — and movement generally — as easy as possible to get into. Our trainers are on hand to guide you through the gym floor and help you build a routine that suits your body and your goals.

Jeff has put together a 15-minute stretching routine that covers the major muscle groups, with alternatives shown for each stretch so you can work at a level that suits you. Jeff is a dedicated trainer who has been with Healthways for ten years and has a keen interest in helping his clients move well and feel well. He is particularly passionate about helping people maintain their quality of life as they age.

Behind the Lessons: Hierarchy of Inclusive Teaching

No two children learn the same way. Some take to the water quickly, others need more time, more encouragement, or a different approach entirely. This is something our teaching team thinks about constantly, and it's built into the foundation of how they're trained.

At Healthways, all swim teachers are trained in the Hierarchy of Inclusive Teaching, a framework that recognises individual difference and gives teachers practical, stage-by-stage strategies to support every student in their class. The guiding principle is simple: influence positive experiences that meet the needs of the student, underpinned by the principles of child development and communication.

In practice, you might notice your child's teacher using verbal and visual cues to help instructions land, adjusting their communication style to genuinely influence rather than just direct, or tailoring the class format to suit the individuals in front of them that day. Keeping students engaged is a constant focus, and teachers are trained to scaffold across five stages of skill development, varying things like distance, floatation support, hands-on assistance, the number of swimmers in the water at once, and the difficulty of the skill itself.

This was the focus of one of our recent professional development sessions. Watch our video to see it in action.
