Grassroots motorsport in South Australia is feeling the strain as rising fuel prices begin to hit events where it hurts most: competitor numbers, spectator attendance, and event viability.
Off The Street Australia says the pressure is already being seen on the ground, with two venues cancelling upcoming events due not only to low numbers, but also because of the growing cost of petrol and diesel. For many competitors, officials, and fans, the cost of simply getting to an event is becoming too much.
The issue is especially severe for grassroots motorsport, where participants often travel long distances towing cars, carrying spare parts, tyres, tools, and equipment. Diesel costs have surged in South Australia, while petrol prices have also remained a major concern for households and travellers. That flow-on effect is now being felt across the motorsport community.
When fuel rises sharply, motorsport becomes harder to justify for everyday people. Competitors pull out, crews scale back, spectators stay home, and venues are left trying to run events without the numbers needed to make them viable. For a scene that depends on strong turnouts and community participation, those cost pressures can quickly turn into cancellations.
Off The Street Australia says this is exactly why South Australia needs more accessible and affordable motorsport infrastructure closer to the metro area. When people are forced to travel hours to attend or compete, fuel becomes one of the biggest barriers to entry. In the current climate, that barrier is growing fast.
The broader concern is that this is no longer just a one-off inconvenience. Fuel prices have become a wider cost-of-living issue across South Australia, and motorsport is one of many sectors being affected. Families are cutting discretionary spending, and that includes weekend events, track days, burnouts, and club meets.
This comes at a time when grassroots motoring participation has otherwise been receiving support and recognition in South Australia. But if travel and transport costs continue to climb, those gains risk being undone by simple affordability.
Off The Street Australia believes the cancellations are an early warning sign. The passion for motorsport is still there, but passion alone cannot cover the cost of towing vehicles, filling transporters, and making long regional trips every weekend.
If fuel prices remain high and attendance keeps dropping, more events could be placed at risk in the months ahead.
