THROWBACK THURSDAY

Going back to 2002 when trial seeding was in full swing 🌱

From small plot trials through to farmer scale demos. A lot has changed over the years but in many ways it still feels very much the same. Research in the paddock alongside growers continues to be a core part of our work today.

A great summary from WMG on the Sustainable Solutions for Sandy Soils project and what’s ahead for the region.

There’s plenty happening behind the scenes, and we’re looking forward to bringing some of these conversations to local growers through upcoming Sandy Soils peer learning groups. Stay tuned for more details soon.

Around 21% of West Midlands farmland lacks adequate groundcover during peak erosion risk periods. Shorter seasons and more variable breaks are making that harder to manage, not easier.

A new five-year project, Sustainable Solutions for Sandy Soils, is working across the region to test what actually works on local soils and local conditions, rather than applying solutions developed elsewhere. WMG is a delivery partner alongside Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development , Mingenew Irwin Group and Edith Cowan University (ECU) .

WMG's latest article covers what the project aims to do, what growers across the region told us in the knowledge-gathering phase, and what demonstration and monitoring work is coming. If you farm sandy soils in the West Midlands, this one is worth knowing about.
