It’s that magical time of the weekend again where I get to shamelessly spotlight our riders and ride leaders… and this week delivered plenty of material 😄
The program had more changes than a rider with a dodgy Di2: B2B rolled out a fresh new start/finish at Muzz, G1 took an early mark, Norman traded full-gas Glorious for some trail flirting, and James casually dropped a G1 “masterclass” featuring Strathpine, Dayboro and Glorious. Because apparently one climb just isn’t enough 🙃

Now… it’s a rare day when our Head Coach Dave ends up in my firing line, but here we are. In an act of great generosity, Dave sponsored the G2 and G4 rides with gels (big thanks to the team Fuelr 👏)… however, G3—clearly the most elite, humble, and best-looking group—received exactly zero gel allocation for our Brookfield adventure. No hard feelings Dave and Lachy… we assume you just recognise natural talent when you see it 🤣

With a big chunk of the crew at B2B, numbers were a little lighter, but we still rolled strong with G2, G3 and G4. G2, powered by premium, performance-enhancing (legally, I assume) gels and led by Lachy and Andrew, headed out with nine riders to Brookfield and Coot-tha. They looked annoyingly smooth cruising past us—honestly, I think I saw a slight glow. Definitely the gels 😏

G3 (the “independent athletes collective”), led by Cameron and myself, kept things gritty with a Brookfield run. No Cootha this time—Changy had to bail early, which we’re choosing to interpret as strategic energy conservation. It was wet, dirty, and just misty enough to question life choices… but we got it done 💪

Meanwhile, G4 rolled out 25 strong led by Jonathan, Steffan, Dave and crew, heading to Sandgate and Nudgee via Gympie Rd. Reports suggest high morale, strong vibes, and possibly gel-fuelled overperformance.
Over at B2B, more than 40 BNECC riders tackled the 100km and 140km routes, expertly orchestrated by caffeine-powered Jon M. Huge effort all round—legs, lungs, and coffee tabs all tested.
All in all: epic rides, top banter, questionable decision-making, and stories for days. Same time next week… and Dave, we’ll be waiting for our gels 😉

It’s Sunday. It’s winter. It’s Brisbane. And BNECC rolled out 83 riders who clearly don’t understand the concept of “sleeping in” — all rugged up, looking like a peloton of high-performance skiers on wheels.

Let’s kick off with the absolute UNIT that was G4 — 28 riders requiring not one, not two, but a small committee of ride leaders (Jon, Jonathan, Grace, Graham, Steffan, Jarrod and Dan) to safely shepherd the herd. This Brissie-to-Bay rehearsal had them heading from Muzz Crit out to Carbrook and back, riding like they’d already seen next week’s café menu. Rumour has it Jon M didn’t stop mid-ride for a bonus coffee, which frankly raises more questions than answers. Huge good luck to this crew for next weekend — bikes fast, coffees faster.

G3 rolled out with a tidy 25 under the steady hands of Liza, Tony, Dave and Nick. A casual “little climb” up Mt Gravatt (as if), followed by a “spicy” Ford Rd hit-out that probably escalated quickly. Sensible energy management was planned ahead of Wellington Point… whether it actually happened is classified. A quick Cleveland regroup meant bay views, fresh air, and at least three riders pretending they weren’t cooked.

Meanwhile, G1 and G2 independently decided that climbing Mt Mee was a great idea… on purpose.

G1 — featuring the Avengers of cycling (James, Tim, Norman, Ben) — set out for 115km and 1500m of climbing, then casually added “a bit extra” like it was a side of fries. Strava suggests it turned into a full-send festival of PR hunting. Hydration? Questionable. Speed? Illegal in several countries.

G2, led by Lachlan and Andrew, quietly put in a seriously strong ride themselves — solid pace, big effort. In fact, based on the data, there’s a non-zero chance G1 accidentally did a “recovery ride” at G2 race pace.

Until next Sunday — stay safe, stay upright, and B2B crew… send it (responsibly). 🚴‍♂️💨

A cracking way to wrap up the last day of autumn—no rain, a balmy 14+ degrees, and 88 legends rolling out. G3 and G4 kicked off from GBB, while G2 gathered at Planet Cycles for what can only be described as Shrek’s Ride: Director’s Cut, now playing at warp speed (more on that shortly).
Personal highlight: I stayed upright and finished a full ride. Growth. Meanwhile, the tire gods picked one group and said, “you know what would be funny? Four flats.” Brutal.

No official G1, but that didn’t stop James, Tim and Norman rolling a “casual” 35km/h. Norman called it “easy Z2”—a statement currently under investigation for making us mortals feel slow 😉

G4—led by the Magnificent Seven (Rod, Grace, Jonathan, Dave, Graham, Daniel and Lucy)—guided 30 riders and 5 flats later, Jonathan earned a loyalty card: fix 5, get 1 free. Everyone made it back safely (emotionally questionable), and Group B is now shopping for tires made of Kevlar and prayers.

G3 split into two groups for a friendly spin to Brookfield and a gentle tickle up the Three Fingers (read: chaos). Liza briefed, set the groups, and—surprise!—a flat gave us a breather from what had become “accidentally full gas Sunday.” Shoutout to Tom for the perfectly timed “tactical puncture.” PRs flew, egos inflated, and a few riders squeezed in a bonus coffee before successfully lobbying for a shorter route home. Democracy won. Fitness lost. Coffee gained.
Liza’s group stuck to plan but still copped a double puncture and a chain drop—because the universe demands balance.

Now… the Shrek Ride. Lachlan and his swamp squad tackled a “relaxed” 122km with 826m elevation at just under 33km/h (didn’t manage your 35kmh expected, better luck next time Shrek😊). They added five flats, bringing the club total to a record 14. Lachlan, thriving in swamp conditions, embraced his inner Shrek—fixing tyres and even sketching Shrek’s face on Strava like a true artist of suffering.

Next weekend’s cooler—so bring layers, strong legs, and definitely spare tires.

Cracking weekend for some very serious BNECC adventures — weeks in the making, tactical briefings, reconnaissance drives, support cars, and even chalk on a mountain. Yes, we’re basically professional now 🤣

Menu for the day: G3/G4 tackled the O’Reilly’s Challenge (aka vertical suffering), G2 rolled Gap Creek to Moggill Ferry, and G1 chose high speed with Kholo and friends — provided you could hold James’ wheel (bold assumption).

Starting with O’Reilly’s — and remarkably, no flat tyres. Clearly all the chaos was redistributed elsewhere… directly to me. Minor crash, rear derailleur stuck in the small gear, brief VIP appearance in a support vehicle — we’ll move on 🤦🤣

This was full military coordination: support crew (huge thanks Stefan, David, Mon), ride leaders everywhere (Gerrit, Nik, Carly, Elizabeth, Tiff, Graham, Lucy, Jon, Dan, Genevieve), and 39 riders grinding from Tamborine up to O’Reilly’s and back.
G3 rolled from Yarrabilba with Tony, Dom (part-time), Liza and Jarrod leading 19 riders who decided sleep was optional. Special mention to Nghia casually doing a 200km+ Brisbane return — because why not 🤯
For many, first time up O’Reilly’s — big climbs, big views, big café rewards. Legends.
Now… getting back to my car: rear gears gone, front ring doing all the work. So yes — 60km mostly solo, mostly one gear, accidentally collecting PRs while questioning life decisions. Changy, my riding partner and driving guest, shocked and happy to see me 😊

G2 delivered a cracking ride through Pullenvale to Moggill. Scenic, slightly chilly, and one rider fall — wishing Mark a speedy recovery.

G1 Straight turbo charge 🚀 120km, 1700m, and an “optional” 17km effort. Sure, James. Optional.

Huge thanks to all riders, leaders and support crew — massive effort.

It’s that time of the weekend again—when I get to hype up the absolute legends in this club, celebrate those levelling up… and, of course, respectfully call out anyone who’s wandered into my spotlight for all the wrong (or possibly right?) reasons. Honestly, this weekend was almost a clean sheet. I say almost, because the weather had a cheeky say in things—greasy roads, just enough to keep everyone “honest.”

Rumour has it there may have been a G1 imposter hiding in G2, which could explain some… “enthusiastic” pacing that our so‑called Captain may or may not still be processing. Meanwhile G4 did what G4 does best—big numbers, high vibes, multiple ride leaders, and somehow an SOS thrown in for good measure.

Let’s kick things off with G2—and unfortunately, it didn’t start well for my good mate Changy. Freshly waxed chain, ready to launch… didn’t even make it past the start line. Credit where it’s due though—he handled the walk of shame like a pro, fixed it up (eventually 😊), and still knocked out Cootha and a Riverloop. Commitment. Lachy’s “Beef and Reef” ride—still unclear if food was involved or just wishful thinking—served up a tidy 100km / 1000m. The route took in Samford, before our G2 “guest rider” Norman lit the fuse at Settlement Rd, Samford Range, Winn Rd and Eagle Tce. Reports suggest Lachy was pushing 400W from the back just to stay in touch… while Norman claims he “sat at the back the whole time.”, to avoid punctures he reckons?
Seventeen riders rolled home, mostly intact, possibly a few flats, plenty of drafting, and Changy somewhere looping Brisbane 🤣.

Now G4—my personal favourite, absolute energy, numbers growing, and improvement everywhere. Deb stepped up to B group this week and absolutely crushed it—legend.
44 riders, Five ride leaders (plus Jon, who managed to add a twisted tyre to his resume on the way home—last week no photos, this week mechanicals… progress?). The crew tackled Brookfield, first and third finger, with a hitout at Carmody. As always, the fingers were “self-paced,” which loosely translates to “see you at the top… eventually.”

Enjoy the rest of your Sunday—and we’ll do it all again next week 🚴‍♂️

It’s Sunday… which means one thing: time for your officially unofficial BNECC update 🚴‍♂️

First up, Happy Mother’s Day! A slightly cooler morning, which is cyclist code for “finally, we can suffer without melting.” Three groups rolled out, 80 strong, proving once again that nothing — not temperature, not common sense, not repeated flat tyres — can stop this club.
Let’s address the big result: G3 = most popular group. Clearly due to my world-class leadership skills and magnetic personality. Definitely not Bea, Tom, and Allan doing all the actual work… 😅

Now, last week’s omen of punctures (led by our beloved Club Captain / Lord of the Flats) decided to stick around like a bad Netflix series no one asked for. Flats everywhere. No one safe.

G2 – Led by Lachlan on the Carbrook Classic, cruising at a casual speeds “others, why are my lungs on fire” 33km/h. Lachlan was given ONE job: take group photos. Instead, I received a full fashion editorial of Cooper, featuring what I can only assume was an AI-generated Vanish bottle. Stunning. Inspirational. Completely useless for the recap. Excellent ride though — 90+ km, over 1000m climbing, and not a single group photo to prove it 📸

G3 – Big group (33 riders), expertly managed (by everyone except me). Hit Mt Coot-tha, detoured, climbed, descended, and dealt with a full-blown puncture convention. Giuseppe and DavidT somehow synced flats like it was a planned feature with others following like a pushy’s sale. Momentum slowed, vibes did not. Gap Creek descent and Moggill Ferry “efforts” kept things honest. One rider tested the “summer kit in winter” theory… and promptly turned back 😂

G4 – The only group organised enough to name their ride: “The Avenue / Forest Lake – Mother’s Day Cup.” Strong branding. Weak puncture resistance. Jon apparently “forgot” photos (convenient), but thankfully Gerrit came through. Shorter ride planned to get home to Mum… delayed by flats that looked like they’d been attacked with a knife 🔪

Across all groups: late return to Lost Bean ✅ limbs intact ✅ stories enhanced ✅

Enjoy the rest of Mother’s Day with your loved ones. See you all next Sunday 🚴‍♂️

Let’s start with the win we all felt in our souls: actual ☀️, dry jerseys, bikes that didn’t resemble swamp monsters, and no indoor ride tantrums from Andrew “Changy”, who famously taps out after 15 minutes for a well‑earned break.

All BNECC groups rolled out successfully without incident, unless you count inner tubes as consumables. Lachlan, our undisputed Lord of the Flats, struck again. Another puncture. We’re now confident he holds the club record for most flats in a single season. Bonus efficiency this week: ride leaders reused last weekend’s unused routes.

G1 flew out with Tim and James delivering a masterclass through Gap Creek, Eatons Crossing and the Narangba loop. Three hit‑outs (Gap Ck, Mailman’s and Narangba) with promises not to merge them into one mega‑chop 🚀🧨. Based on the Strava Cups collected, it became one very aero beatdown. Chapeau.

G2, led by Flat King Lachlan and supported by Hayley and Captain Morto, tackled Full Gary. Initially thought to be a Burpengary pun, it simply meant: go full Gaz or is it Burpen “Gary” pun. Mission accomplished—112km, ~700m elevation and a spicy 32km/h average with pain served along Anzac Ave, Rothwell–Kippa Ring and Redcliffe–Margate. Huge ride. Lachlan, we wish you fewer flats and better puns next week.

G3 saw favourites Liza, Tony and DaveS lead 21 riders through nearly 100km and 800m climbing via Jinker Track and Redcliffe, with sides of Colins Rd, the Jinker descent and a Lilley Rd finale. Heart rates soared. Liza and Tony, your G3s are safe next week with me… possibly up Seven Sisters.

G4 embraced chaos with 2 Bumps 🚵🚵‍♀️ —a certified Tiff Special. Translation: Mt Gravatt and Coot‑tha. With 32 riders, nearly 1,000m of climbing over 70km and leaders Tiff, Jon, Adel and Karl, it was part scenic tour, part suffering. Legends.

Our final crew—Nik, Rod and Dan—took seven riders on the BVRT Fernvale–Esk return. A cruisy 90km with gravel‑friendly elevation and suspiciously clean bikes 🤔😂

DaveS is everywhere today, BNECC ride leading course for some new recruits and supported by current leaders ❤️

Final shout‑out to Phil, recovering after his TdB crash. So grateful you will be riding again ❤️‍🩹

Until next week: ride safe, stay upright, avoid Lachlan’s tyres.

19/04/2026

Brisbane absolutely nailed the weather settings this Sunday, delivering peak conditions — and BNECC responded accordingly. 101 riders rolled out, safely (and heroically) wrangled by 12 elite ride leaders, as Sunday rides returned to their regularly scheduled perfection and questionable life choices.

G1 kicked things off. Now, you don’t often hear the words “drafting” and “G1” used in the same paragraph but today was special. Very special. Allegedly there was some cooperation… right up until Person X decided teamwork was optional and casually dropped a few turns north of 800 watts🤯, instantly deleting the rest of the group from view. Carb loading was clearly taken very seriously after a tidy 115 km Carbrook special, finished off with a cake order so large the café is probably reviewing its business continuity plan 😂

Over in G2, Andrew led another cracking ride, with Lachlan’s training program (also known as Captain Pain’s Funhouse) delivering the promised suffering. A 100+ km three‑point special via Cleveland, Victoria and Wellington, described as “firm but friendly” — which loosely translates to “hard, but you lived.” Huge effort from the 17‑strong crew, stacking PRs and cruising above 30 km/h like that’s just what you do now.

G3 rolled deep, with 29 riders guided by Adele, Dave, Nik and Jarrod on a mostly flat Northside Three Fingers, 80 km special covering the cruise terminal, airport and Nudgee. Hitouts? Obviously. Dryandra to the viewing area, Qantas Drive, and the classic overpass‑to‑beach Nudgee drag were all very much on the menu. Add a stack of PRs, 🏆, and photo of the day, plus one rider clearly auditioning for “I’m Too Sexy” energy 😆

Finally, the ever‑reliable, always‑schmick G4, all 47 of them, beautifully supported by Tiff, Jon, Gerrit, Rod, Carly and Russ. An 80 km Samford–Jinka–Sandgate special with — shock — hitouts, followed by some downhill joy from the top of Jinka. I’m on ride‑leading duties next week, and Jon has already warned me to mentally prepare for two coffee stops 🤦😂

Shoutout to Phil recovering in hospital ❤️‍🩹 All BNECC can’t wait to have you back.

Absolute cracker of a day. Same time next week 🚴‍♂️👏

13/04/2026

This is probably the one time of year BNECC doesn’t put on official rides… and naturally the club turned up in force and absolutely owned the TdB. As always, race‑day strategies were carefully discussed, passionately agreed to, and then immediately ignored.

The real heroes of the day were our supporters. Huge love to Tiff, Jon, Dave, Richard, David and Kelly, who popped up all over the course like bonus power‑ups. The standout spot was the big green sign on the front side of Coot‑tha near the summit. Not exactly Uber‑friendly—credit to Tiff, Dave and Jon for the early start and hike up, complete with road chalk like true cycling sages.
Special mention to David and Kelly, who mastered stealth mode. One minute they weren’t there, the next they were suddenly on the Story Bridge cheering us home like cycling ninjas.

I’ll be openly biased and talk about my riding companion Andrew (aka Changy). Absolute legend. Endless entertainment. Zero sense of pace. We started in the “experienced” category (that’s enough detail 😊) and agreed to conserve energy until after Coot‑tha. I lost Changy shortly after the Story Bridge and didn’t see him again until I passed him on the Centenary Highway on the way back. Turns out he’d burned every match—plus a few future ones. I cannot wait for next year’s Changy Strategy & Ex*****on Theatre.

This is why I love this club. Hayley rode with her dad again, and near the summit he was about to walk—until our support crew erupted with cowbells and encouragement.

Suddenly, he was back on the bike. Best supporters in the business. That photo with Tiff and Hayley’s dad says everything. Our kit was impossible to miss—spectators yelling “Go BNECC!”, a Channel 7 cameo, and even the DJ calling out the G4 80km crew for looking schmick. The G4s rode beautifully and showed how bunch riding should be done.

Sadly Phil ended up in hospital after going over an embankment. His summary said it best: “pretty banged but alive—could’ve been worse.” Wishing Phil a speedy recovery; the full BNECC family is behind him.

Huge congratulations to all our podium finishers and qualifiers across so many age groups. Outstanding riding—well done team. See you all this weekend.
