MILDURA SIDECAR MASTERS
To say it was an up and down weekend is an understatement!
The trip started off a bit late, but thanks to JessicaandMichael Murphy from Nexdem Pty Ltd we got the big truck on the road. We rocked into Mildura around 3:30am local time on Saturday morning.
After a bit of work on the bike Saturday arvo, we hit the track for some practice. Everything went well and the bike felt unreal, Michael Liptrott did an awesome job yet again at the teams headquarters Road & Race Motorcycles producing possibly the best FZR motor in a speedway sidecar.
Next was the dash for cash. If it wasn’t for me pushing a bit hard into turns 3 & 4 it might have been a perfect lap, but we managed 4th with only 1 tenth of a second separating the top 4.
Race 1, we got a great start from gate 3 and went around the outside of the boys in turn 2 to grab the lead. That’s about where the good stuff finished! I threw it into 3 a bit hard and almost backed it around, causing the 3 bikes behind me to come together. I was the only bike to get out of turn 4, but was excluded for causing a stoppage.
Race 2, again another good start. Got pushed a little wide in turn 3, mainly because I was a bit soft and left the door open. We were relegated back to last. After resetting we came back to 3rd. I definitely felt like I let that one get away from us.
Race 3, we grabbed the early lead after another good start, but when exiting turn 2 the bike lost all power and shut down.
After checking over the bike in the pits, we couldn’t find a fault. It ran flawlessly. So we thought we’d have another crack.
Race 4, yet again another good start and grabbed the lead. Coming out of turn 2 we yet again had the bike shut down, and we called it a night.
Sorry to the boys that had to dodge me for half the night, I know it’s not fun!
After packing up and putting the bike in the truck, we started stripping it. After only 20 minutes we found the problem, 1 bloody connector! The solder had broken and the wire was barley hanging on. It’s a shame seeing as we checked over everything after the state titles, but I’m thinking the hit in race 1 caused the issue.
Anyway, that’s racing, and that’s why we decided to head east early and get all the issues ironed out.
We learnt a lot and can’t wait to get back in 2 weeks time to have a real crack.
Cheers to everyone involved in making this trip and this season happen, and cheers to my awesome crew for making it a great weekend!
