Southern Soaring League

Southern Soaring League Southern Soaring League (SSL) is a club with a long history of gliding in Australia and welcomes new members and anyone who wishes to learn to fly.

We have a 100 acre field at 1197 Nine Mile Rd Milang where we fly. We hold regular monthly meetings. Southern Soaring League Members fly at the Milang field on most Sundays, dependent on weather, and welcome interested people, and people interested in learning to fly Radio Controlled gliders. They also fly at the field on other days, again dependent on weather conditions. A large variety of glider

s are flown by members, from simple 2 channel, 2m wingspan electric launched gliders, to larger 4m 6 channel gliders with the control system of a full size glider. These gliders are launched either with an onboard electric motor, or by catapulting them with a powerful winch. Also flown are Scale (or replica) gliders of full size gliders. These are launched in a similar manner to full size gliders, using powerful motorised tug planes. New members are taught to fly if necessary, and have full access to the field and the facilities at the field, plus the wealth of knowledge and support of existing members. Membership fees include a Club component, and a component that is paid to the Australian umbrella organisation, the MAAA ,which includes insurance coverage and is a necessary component of membership. As well as General sport flying at the field,members compete in Club competitions, as well as interstate, National, and International events. New members of all ages are welcome at the Southern Soaring League.

We had a great turn out for today’s Scale Glider event which wrapped up 4 days of GPS, general glider flying and scale. Visitors from NZ, NSW and Victoria were very welcome as were a bunch of locals.

I'm sure a few of us still have a Radian in the hanger. They are also interested in doing some aerotow.

I see Joe is having a bad result in his F3J pre world comp to date (round 5) he's dropped a total of 2.9 points over the 5 rounds. (Pretty impressive)

Attended the scale day here last Sunday and froze my bits off, along with another half dozen hardy soles, didn't even venture onto the field, let alone fly anything. The general consensus on the day was a combustion heater would have been great to sit around to chew the fat. Well the stars alighned and I picked one up in Pt Elliott that same day. Installed today and working a treat. (See pics) Bring the marshmallows!

Down at the field yesterday doing what retiries do SFA! Had some fun sorting out my F5J Pike Perfection, think I'm ready to use it for upcoming comps, forgot how well they stay in the air. Put the drone up for a look around, things starting to green up nicely. As can be seen the place was overcrowded! nobody there to hang sh on...bugga🤣
