🌿 Why are Biolinks Important? 🌿

Biolinks, also known as wildlife corridors, are crucial for the health and resilience of our ecosystems. They connect fragmented habitats, allowing wildlife to move freely and safely. This movement is essential for breeding, feeding, and adapting to environmental changes.

For Landcare, biolinks play a vital role in:
🌱 Enhancing Biodiversity: By linking isolated habitats, biolinks support diverse plant and animal populations.
🌱 Boosting Ecosystem Health: Continuous habitats help maintain the natural processes that keep our ecosystems balanced and thriving.
🌱 Building Resilience: Wildlife corridors enable species to migrate and adapt, especially in the face of climate change and habitat loss.
🌱 Supporting Local Communities: Healthy ecosystems contribute to sustainable agriculture, water quality, and overall environmental well-being.

Want to see the real-world impact of biolinks? Watch this video on the Bass Coast Biolinks Project by Landcare Victoria and Bass Coast Landcare Network : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3egO6gjjDdU

(This video was created for the Landcare Farming Program, a joint initiative by the National Landcare Network and Landcare Australia , and funded by the Australian Government’s National Landcare Program).

Southern Cassowary
Casuarius casuarius
Endangered in Australia

On a week long trip to the Cairns region in early Spring, we spent a night in the tropical rainforests of Kuranda, hoping to encounter the resident Southern Cassowary.

We wandered around our accomodation & surrounds without much luck, & with the sunlight all but gone we thought the our day was pretty much done. So we jumped in the car & headed off towards the local pub for a feed.

Well about 500m from our accommodation we came face to face with an adult male & a juvenile, meandering along the roadside! The light was fading fast, but at times like these you try & make the most of the opportunities that present themselves.

Imagine our surprise when we then heard a second adult calling & within minutes the larger female appeared out of the rainforest right next to the male & juvie! We weren't sure what was going to happen here - males are responsible for incubating & raising the young as females move on to find another mate, & the males can be very protective of their offspring. But these adults seemed to be pretty relaxed around one another, possibly a pair, even sharing a drink together as the three took turns drinking from a roadside puddle.

Despite the average lighting & cramped shooting location on a road surrounded by rainforest either side, I was quite pleased to come away with this shot of the two adults together.

Red-browed finches were in the park earlier on this week. They are looking for water in what is turning into a dry Autumn in this area.
Please fill up your backyard birdbaths, ice cream containers or buckets in the garden. It helps if you put a bamboo stake guard or stick in deeper containers so the bees, butterflies and birds don't drown. Thankyou for your help in looking after our local wildlife.
