🐴 Little Bugsy Update 🐴
Geez, I'm pretty proud of this little pony.
When Bugsy first arrived, she wasn't exactly dealt the best hand. She was quite wormy, underweight, needed her feet done and had some pretty big gaps in her education. None of that was her fault, of course, she was just trying to work with what she'd been given.
Over the last couple of weeks we've spent a lot of time going right back to basics.
Lots of groundwork.
Lots of long reining.
Lots of teaching her to slow down, think and understand what we're asking.
What became really obvious was that she wasn't a nasty pony at all. She'd simply hit a bit of a mental roadblock and when she got worried, she'd react because she didn't know another answer.
Yesterday Lynn hopped on for Bugsy's very first ride back under saddle and kept things nice and quiet with some walking work.
Today was Day 2.
Today Rosa took her through her first walk, trot and canter under saddle. Unfortunately we didn't catch the canter on video, but we finished on a really positive note and I couldn't have asked for much more from her.
What I'm loving most is seeing her start to relax.
She's not constantly looking for something to worry about anymore.
She's starting to listen.
She's starting to think.
And she's starting to trust people a bit more.
For a pony that arrived needing a bit of TLC both physically and mentally, she's come a heck of a long way in a short amount of time.
I'm also really proud of Lynn and Rosa. They haven't just been riders in this process, they've been learning about horse behaviour, groundwork and education along the way too. That's something I really enjoy sharing with my clients.
Anyone can jump on and ride a horse.
Learning why a horse does what it does, and helping them work through it, is a whole different skill set.
The best part?
Bugsy is showing all the signs that she might just have a permanent home here with us. With a few more miles under her belt and plenty more education, I reckon she's going to make a cracking little school pony in the future.
Not bad for a little pony that arrived looking a bit rough around the edges.
Pretty proud of you, Bugsy. ❤️🐴
