πŸ† XCR Round 9: Burnley 15km

Much anticipation had been building for the penultimate round of the XCR season with the stakes very high for our open men’s teams in particular. Our Div 1, 3 and 5 teams were all facing relegation battles but the team was up for the fight and were locked in and ready to go.

It was a new-look Burnley event this year where open runners raced over 15km and juniors over 4km. A war of attrition along the picturesque banks of the Yarra River.

It was a very strong performance from our open men’s teams in particular with their best results of the season yet. We also had a number of our juniors have very good runs too.

πŸ”₯ Team results:
πŸ‘‰πŸΌ 4th for our men’s division 1 team (Seth O, Michael K, Sam B, Baden M, Oliver S and Sami M)- only 14 points off 2nd

πŸ‘‰πŸΌ 4th for our men’s division 3 team (Daniel K, Adam B, Josh K, Billy S and Jordan Sh)- only 30 points off 2nd

πŸ‘‰πŸΌ 5th for our men’s 40+ team (Adam B, Billy S and Mat L)

πŸ”₯ Individual results:
There were also some pretty sensational individual performances, undoubtedly highlighted by a cruisy win from multiple Australian rep Seth O’Donnell:
πŸ₯‡ 1st for Seth O in 44:23

πŸ‘‰πŸΌ 4th for Louise S in 50-54

πŸ‘‰πŸΌ 5th for Adam B in 40-44

πŸ‘‰πŸΌ 6th for Billy S in 40-44

πŸ‘‰πŸΌ 10th for Teagan S in U16

πŸ‘‰πŸΌ 11th for Calvin S in U16

πŸ‘‰πŸΌ 15th for Oliver S in U18

πŸ‘‰πŸΌ 15th for Mat L in 50-54

πŸ‘‰πŸΌ 15th for Michael K in open race

πŸ‘‰πŸΌ 31st for Sam Bin open race

πŸ‘‰πŸΌ 44th for Baden M in open race

While we held up our end of the equation to make inroads into our various relegation battles, frustratingly the teams we are battling with also stepped up which meant the gains made weren’t quite as substantial as we would have hoped. But we did what we could and can be proud of our efforts. Our hopes remain mathematically alive so we may yet see a last minute miracle for Div 1 particularly but we’ll have to wait and see.

We are back in action for the final this coming Saturday, the Tan relays!

Thanks to for our tent which has been on tour throughout the winter season and has kept our athletes dry!

πŸ’›πŸ–€ Go Mentone!

πŸ’›πŸ–€ Our very own Seth O’Donnell is hosting a Q&A evening at PhysiPro Athletic in Seaford on Friday 28 August, and he’d really love to have a strong Mentone contingent there.

In his own words:

β€œMentone is a big part of my story. It was where I properly entered athletics after coming across from local footy, before eventually progressing to national titles and representing Australia internationally.”

β€œThe night won’t just be a run-through of results. I’ll be talking about the parts of the journey that were actually useful β€” training, injuries, setbacks, mistakes, racing, and the decisions I’d change if I was starting again β€” before opening the floor for questions.”

β€œI think it could be particularly valuable for the club’s athletes, juniors, parents and coaches who want to hear what the progression actually looked like behind the scenes.”

πŸ† XCR RND 8: BALLARAT HALF MARATHON

A small but courageous team ventured out to Ballarat for possibly the coldest XCR event in recent memory where athletes had to battle borderline hypothermia in addition to the longest distance of the season. After being treated to perfect conditions for events held in Ballarat in recent years, the tables well and truly turned this year, but those who did make the long journey still had rewards on offer with many running pbs.

There were some strong individual results amongst our 10 participants and our teams battled hard to do as well as they could.

πŸ”₯ Team results:
πŸ‘‰πŸ» 9th for our men’s division 1 team (Michael K, Sam B, Oliver S, Daniel K and Adam B)- only 8 points off 7th
πŸ‘‰πŸ» 15th for our men’s division 3 team (Alexander R, Jordan S and Nikolaj D)
πŸ‘‰πŸ» 26th for our men’s 40+ team (Adam B and Alexander R)- one runner short of likely taking out the win

πŸ”₯ Individual highlights:
πŸ‘‰πŸ» 4th for Louay Benaoum in U18 men’s race
πŸ‘‰πŸ» 4th for Lily Lambert in U18 women’s race
πŸ‘‰πŸ» 6th for Adam Barker in 40-44
πŸ‘‰πŸ» 9th for Alexander Ruda in 40-44
πŸ‘‰πŸ» 11th for Michael Kernahan in open men’s race
πŸ‘‰πŸ» 29th for Sam Bunnage in open men’s race

Thank you to everyone who made the long trip to help us put ourselves in the mix to pick up some valuable points. There was plenty of team spirit shown on a day which really tested everyone’s resolve with the challenges to be faced.

πŸ’›πŸ–€ There is a bit of a break until our next XCR round which is in just under 4 weeks from now on Sunday the 6th of September. It will be the new 15km event at Burnley which this year has switched venues with Ballarat. Juniors will race over 4km. If you would like to race make sure to enter by Wednesday the 2nd of September at midday. In the meantime we have the Australian cross country champs in Ballarat on the 22nd of August where many Mentonians will be in action.

πŸ’›πŸ–€ Congratulations Seth!!!
