I look back at my coaching in the early days and would hate to be coached like that. Knew my sport and ran a session with military precision, gave most of the playing time to the better players and then had to put the bench players on at critical times because I hadn’t put them on earlier. Thought I had to stay far removed from my players, not about fun, it was about work. I coached just like how I was coached - the apprenticeship of observation. Fast forward and add a couple of degrees and mentors on the way and my coaching is about athlete autonomy, relatedness, and creating sessions that are fun, engaging, and challenging. I want athletes to thrive, come back next season, and invest in a life of physical activity. I now work with coaches exploring the building blocks of autonomy, belonging, and competence development - in other words motivation. How can we create environments where athletes (and) coaches thrive. If you are interested in exploring the role of motivation in coaching join me in January 14, at the Point Lonsdale Bowls club.
