5 Essential Skills Every Beginner Swimmer Should Master

Swimming is a life skill that not only benefits your overall health and well-being, but can also be a lifesaver in emergency situations. If you're a beginner swimmer, you might feel overwhelmed by the number of techniques and skills to learn. But don't worry! We've compiled a list of the 5 essential skills every beginner swimmer should master to help you become confident and competent in the water.

Breath Control
Breath control is the foundation of swimming, and learning to manage your breathing is critical for comfort and success in the water. Start by practicing rhythmic breathing to establish a steady pattern. Inhale through your mouth when your face is above the water, and exhale through your nose or mouth when your face is submerged. This technique will help prevent water from entering your airway and maintain your energy levels while swimming.

Tip: Practice breath control on dry land by lying on your back and taking slow, deep breaths in a controlled manner.

Kicking Technique
An efficient kick is essential for maintaining balance and propelling yourself through the water. For beginners, the flutter kick is a great place to start. This kick is used in front crawl and backstroke, and involves alternating leg movements in a continuous motion. Keep your legs relatively straight with a slight bend in the knees, and point your toes to reduce drag.

Tip: Practice your kicking technique with a kickboard to isolate the legs and build strength.

Body Position and Buoyancy
Maintaining a streamlined body position is crucial for efficient swimming. Aim to keep your body as horizontal as possible, with your head in line with your spine. This will reduce drag and help you move through the water more smoothly. Additionally, work on improving your natural buoyancy by relaxing your body and letting the water support you.

Tip: Use a floatation device, like a pull buoy, to help you find the correct body position and focus on buoyancy.

Arm Movements
Effective arm movements, or strokes, are essential for propelling yourself through the water. As a beginner, it's best to start with the basic strokes such as front crawl, backstroke, and breaststroke. Focus on extending your arm fully in front of you, and then pulling it through the water with a strong, controlled motion. Remember to rotate your body to enhance your reach and improve overall efficiency.

Tip: Practice arm movements on land, mimicking the motion of each stroke to develop muscle memory.

Building Endurance
Building endurance is vital for becoming a strong and confident swimmer. The key is to start slowly and gradually increase the distance and duration of your swims. Incorporate interval training, alternating between periods of high-intensity swimming and rest, to boost your stamina. As your endurance improves, you'll be able to swim longer distances with ease and enjoy the many health benefits of swimming.

Tip: Set realistic goals and track your progress to stay motivated and committed to improving your swimming skills.

Mastering these five essential skills will set you on the path to becoming a confident and skilled swimmer. Remember, progress takes time and practice. Be patient, seek guidance from experienced swimmers or coaches, and most importantly, enjoy the journey! Happy swimming!

: The Power of Technology

In today's fast-paced world, it's more important than ever to work smarter, not harder. With the help of technology, we can automate repetitive tasks, streamline processes, and focus our efforts on high-impact work that moves the needle.

Here are a few ways technology can help you work smarter:

Automation is the process of using technology to automate repetitive tasks that would otherwise require manual intervention. This can include anything from scheduling appointments to processing payments to sending out email newsletters. By automating these tasks, you can save time and reduce errors, freeing up your resources to focus on higher-level tasks.

Collaboration tools like project management apps and instant messaging platforms can help teams work together more efficiently. By providing a centralized platform for communication and file-sharing, these tools can reduce the need for back-and-forth emails and help teams stay on the same page.

Data analysis tools can help you make more informed decisions by providing insights into your business performance. With the help of dashboards, visualizations, and predictive analytics, you can identify trends, track KPIs, and make data-driven decisions.

Thanks to advances in technology, remote work is now more feasible than ever. By allowing employees to work from home or other remote locations, businesses can reduce overhead costs and increase productivity. Remote work also offers employees greater flexibility and work-life balance, which can improve morale and reduce turnover.

Mobile apps can help you stay productive and connected on the go. Whether you're traveling for business or just need to stay on top of things while you're out of the office, mobile apps can help you manage your workload, communicate with your team, and stay on top of your schedule.

has the power to help us work smarter, not harder. By leveraging automation, collaboration tools, data analysis, remote work, and mobile apps, we can reduce workload and increase efficiency. So why not take advantage of these tools and start working smarter today?

In today’s modern world, digital media plays a huge role in our lives. Apps are emerging as an important media type for businesses to attract, engage and retain customers.

While many business owners may think developing and having an app is too expensive or unnecessary, a mobile app can actually help small business engage with and build their customer base, drive sales, and most importantly improve communication with their existing customer base.

Here are 6 reasons why your swim school should consider investing in a mobile business app.

3 steps for bouncing back – How to maximise your swim school enrolment numbers upon re-opening

Many swim schools across Australia and New Zealand have recommenced lessons yet some are still waiting to be given the green light to re-open.

For those who have re-opened, many are seeing swim school enrolment numbers are down on their pre-closure numbers.

This is to be expected.

Some families may not be fully comfortable returning their children to lessons just yet.

Some centres still face restrictions on numbers however from speaking to the industry it appears that enrolment numbers are down between 15 and 20 percent in cases where there are no number restrictions.

As time passes we can expect confidence to grow and eventually numbers to return to more normal levels. Swimming remains as an important life skill for every child to learn.

In this article, we explore how swim schools can maximise their enrolment numbers upon re-opening so they can bounce back as quickly as possible.

Case Study: Swim School Transforms Customer Satisfaction With SwimDesk

Cumberland council in Sydney NSW implemented SwimDesk in their swim school in 2017.

We check in with swim school coordinator Peter to gather his feedback about using SwimDesk in their two swim schools.

Before you implemented SwimDesk, What was the main challenge you were facing?

Communication! When we first started out, we took over Guilford swim centres; (our biggest indoor centre) we just didn’t have the staff to be getting around to every single customer and explaining how the kids are progressing and this was impacting customer satisfaction.

In terms of the implementation process of getting SwimDesk up and running in, How was that? Was it difficult?

From a technical perspective, it’s very simple. It was just, obviously making sure that you train up all the staff and then set the procedures and expectations.

How have your customers (parents) responded to the program?

We get a lot of positive feedback about it. They are saying that they’re very happy that they can constantly see that kind of timeline and history and be able to see how their children are progressing for our programs via the parent portal and through the assessment emails.

Can you summarize the main benefit you’ve got since implementing the system?

Interesting. At first, I would have originally said that it was the communication benefit. But now, at least from my perspective, it’s also the ability to be able to track certain things that we wouldn’t have been able to do in the past.

I think the biggest benefit is the data collection side of it and being able to use and analyse that to make informed decisions.

Do you think overall, SwimDesk has been worth the investment for your centre?

Peter: Oh yeah, definitely. 100%.

SwimDesk helps swim school manage assessments, track student progress and communicate improvement to parents.

The program provides powerful communication tools and reporting designed to help transform your swim schools customer satisfaction and retention.

SwimDesk can easily integrate with your current management software giving your greater capabilities to increase the success of your swim school.
