Bush medicine workshop 🌿

Our women's group had the privilege of hosting Wirangu, Gugada, Mirning healer Wyarta Miller from Yana Warna by Wiramai who shared with the group her knowledge and skills making bush medicine 🖤💛❤️

Wyarta uses eremophila, native to her country on South Australia's west coast, which helps with inflammation, insomnia, depression, anxiety, and much more 🌱

The women enjoyed working together under Wyarta's guidance to create the medicine, while sharing yarns in a Culturally safe space 🥄

Our Women's Group meets every Wednesday at VAHS Preston from 11am-2pm. New faces are always welcome and we often have incredible guests like Wyarta with us to run Cultural workshops 👩

CW: This post contains statistics and reference to su***de and self-harm. Please proceed with caution and if you need support call Yarning Safe N Strong on 1800 959 563, or Lifeline on 13 11 14 for support. If you or someone you know is in immediate danger, phone 000 (Triple Zero) for emergency services.

Today is World Su***de Prevention Day and R U OK Day 🎗️

We know that su***de has a devastating impact on our Community, with the most recent Closing the Gap report showing significant distress in First Nations Communities, with su***de as one of the leading cause of death for Mob, and rates of su***de for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men being 2.6 times that of non-Aboriginal men.

This is our brothers, cousins, uncles, loved ones, and Mob. Governments must shift their approach and invest in Mob-led solutions to address this crisis.

The Western system’s approaches to su***de prevention are failing our Mob. When Aboriginal health is in Aboriginal hands, with genuine social and emotional wellbeing (SEWB) approaches tailored to the needs of Community.

VAHS is here for you on Su***de Prevention Day, R U OK Day, and every day, through our dedicated SEWB team, our front line mental health and medical professionals, our free and confidential Yarning Safe N Strong service, and our ties to Community beyond our clinics.

You are not alone and there is no shame in seeking help. Check in with a mate if you haven’t heard then for a while and you think something is wrong. Hold your loved ones close, and let’s pull together to reverse these heartbreaking statistics in our Community 🖤💛❤️

Have you been cerv'd? 🔬

If you have a cervix, and are aged between 25 and 74, you're eligible for FREE cervical screening every five years through the National Cervical Screening Program.

Even if you have had your HPV vaccination, keeping up with your screening is essential to identify any issues early to prevent and treat cervical cancer.

You can also complete the test yourself using a self-testing kit in the comfort of your home.
