Actual competence is not equal to perceived competence.

We can be the most qualified or knowledgeable person in the room, but people will only perceive us at the level that we're able to *convey* our authority.

And I get it, it's silly that we have to perform or prove ourselves to others.

But this is the nature of human interaction.

Therefore, our success is highly dependent on our ability to impress in an interview, influence in a sales call, or showcase competence in a negotiation.

Last year, while speaking at an event, I bumped into the owner of the hotel where it was taking place.

We had a 2-minute chat before he was whisked off to other duties.

During that time, we exchanged contact details for a casual coffee catch up.

At coffee, there was no point where he enquired about communication training for his team, so how did I close the deal to do a training for his team of 53 within the following 2 weeks?

Marilyn Monroe's voice is distinct, but it's not good or bad. Different vocal traits are simply more or less effective in a given situation.

When we become aware of the ingredients of our voice, then we can use our voice in our favour in meetings, sales and negotiations.

We are no longer held back due the way we talk.

Instead, we can show the world who we are anytime we open our mouth 🗣️

Watch me intentionally re-arrange our whole table when we sit down for a coffee meeting, or tell the events team to remove my mic stand from the stage 😅

These things seem small, but imagine if rapport is built upon 100 communication "tokens".

If we ignore one too many tokens, we'll dip below 50/100 and then we'll be wondering why we struggle to leave a good first impression in meetings that matter.

Compared to if we put every token into the basket of great communication, we can build a great relationship with anyone, even the ones who would have previously intimidated us 🤝

It feels unfair... But we already know that these are the rules of the game.
