Want to bowl faster? Want to take more wickets? Those aren't the same question, and they don't have the same answer.

Pace comes from momentum through the crease, a front leg that braces, hip and shoulder separation, and the strength to hold it. That's months of work. More wickets comes from your own challenging length, a wrist that holds the seam, attacking the stumps, and a plan for the over. That's available this weekend.

Chasing pace is a rebuild. Taking more wickets is usually a decision.

Pick one this pre-season, not both. Rebuilding an action makes you temporarily worse before it makes you better, that's fine in October, not in January.

You don't need to book a full session to find out what's actually happening in your action.

Send me footage, a few deliveries side-on, a few from behind, full run-up, good light, landscape. I'll slow it down, break down the key positions, and send back a private video talking you through exactly what I'm seeing, plus a short priority list, one or two things that matter, not ten.

$50. Delivered via private link within 7 days. Works just as well if you're not near Melbourne too.

A spell is six overs, not thirty-six balls.

Good bowlers rarely take a wicket with the ball they wanted to take it with. They take it with the ball after four that looked the same. That means a spell has a shape, what you bowl in your fifth over depends on what you did in your first.

Overs one and two, land your stock ball and find your rhythm. Overs three and four, work out what they don't like by watching their feet rather than the scoreboard. Over five, set it up: four balls in the same place so the fifth asks a different question. Over six, finish honest, tired bowlers drift short, so bowl the fuller length on purpose.

Three rules that hold up: one plan per over, a boundary is not a reason to change, and talk to the bowler at the other end.

You can't force swing. You can only allow it.

When a bowler wants the ball to move, they start steering it, angling the body, pushing the hand across, aiming wider and wider outside off. Swing isn't something the arm does. It's what the air does to a seam that is held still.

Four things decide it: a still seam, a firm wrist behind it through release, one side kept shiny, and a full length so the ball has time in the air. Bowl it short and the movement happens behind the batter.

Three drills for the wrist and seam: chalk a stripe across the seam and film your release in slow motion, checking the wrist finishes down and across the front leg. Seam-up throws from six paces, side-on, no pace. Then a kneeling release drill from ten metres, so the legs are out of it and only the wrist and fingers are left.

Have you ever watched your own seam in slow motion?

Does your bowling group need to think more at training?

You'll recognise the session: queue, six balls, chat, repeat. Nobody could tell you what they were working on. Every bowler bowls the same night regardless of their role on Saturday. Ball count is high and nobody is counting. That group trains hard and improves slowly, the work is real, the direction isn't.

Give every over a job. Name the line, length and seam before you bowl it, then score it out of six. Train the role rather than the group. Put cones down for the field so a ball in the wrong area costs something. And have one person counting balls, because it's the cheapest injury prevention a club has.

Four questions to ask this week: what's your job in this attack, what are you working on tonight, how many balls did you bowl last week, and which of your six went where you wanted?

"Bowling Lab has improved our bowlers' technique, confidence and mindset through quality, individualised coaching."

That's from the head coach at a club we've been working with this season.

Squad assessment days and individual sessions are open for clubs and academies, every quick filmed and assessed, with a written report and a plan for the season. Pre-season and right through the summer.

DM us to book your club in.

Club nets are built for batters. You run in, bowl forty balls, and the only feedback is "good areas". Do that for five seasons and you finish with the same action you started with, including the fault that keeps putting you on the sideline.

An hour with someone watching only you changes three things: you see your own action in slow motion, you get one thing to work on instead of ten, and you stop guessing about why your side aches in the third spell.

We won't add ten kilometres an hour in a session, anyone promising that is selling you something. You get an honest read, the one change worth making, and a programme to make it stick.

Book one session. Just one. DM us or link in bio.

1:1 coaching is open for pre-season and runs right through the summer.

One bowler, one action, one plan. We film your action at high speed, work out where the pace is leaking or why you dont take as many wickets, and you leave with a written program, your footage, and a weekly bowling load to follow. One or two changes, never a list of ten.

Single sessions or a six-week block. Squad assessment days also available for clubs and academies.

DM to book, or link in bio for this month's availability.

Five slides, same format.

In fifty-over cricket you can't stop a good batter scoring. You can decide where they score.

Before every ball: which shot am I taking away, which run am I offering instead, is the field set for it, and can I bowl that ball twice in a row. If the last answer is no, bowl the ball you own.

Practise it properly, put a field down in the nets, bowl six-ball scenarios, and score the plan rather than the wicket. Six singles off a good over is a win.

What I learnt from club trainings this week: energy towards the batter in the follow through is often not thought about.

Bowlers peel off the pitch too quickly. Ball released, two or three steps, and they're already veering sideways and turning back for their mark. Nobody does it on purpose, it happens when the follow through is treated as the walk back rather than part of the delivery.

We want all the energy going towards the batter. If the body is already heading off to the side at release, some of that momentum was spent turning instead of driving through the ball. Pace leaks, the line drifts, and the load ends up going through the back.

Put a cone four steps past the crease in line with the stumps and run past it before you turn. Chase the ball with your chest. Then film from behind the arm and watch the first three steps after release, where they go tells you where the energy went.
