Wests Tigers and Benji Marshall were set to welcome Israel Folau back to the NRL – until the ARL Commission allegedly intervened, ultimately blocking the cross-code star’s return.

Israel Folau has accused the NRL of double standards in response to a social media post from his wife Maria outlining his failed bid to join the Wests Tigers.

Folau, who recently finished a stint in Japanese rugby union, was in talks with the Tigers and their coach Benji Marshall over a potential return to the NRL on a train and trial contract for the remainder of the season.

However, Maria Folau claimed the move was scuppered when it became apparent that the ARL Commission opposed his return and the board of the Wests Tigers became spooked.

Maria Folau said they had been told that Israel had been cleared to return only to be informed a week later that his comeback plans had been blocked - she pointed the finger at ARL Commissioner Wayne Pearce.

“His reasoning behind not wanting Izzy to play is because of inclusiveness, whatever that means, and then also that it would be a bad look to have Izzy back in the game,” Maria Folau said.

“Then an associate of ours got in contact with Wayne Pierce by text, and it was the same thing - that Izzy wasn’t welcome to play.

As Nathan Cleary prosessed the Blues’ heavy defeat, cameras panned across the Blues dressing rooms where the devastated star was being comforted by his long-term partner Mary Fowler.

A tough night for NSW halfback Nathan Cleary at the MCG ended with him in the arms of Matildas superstar Mary Fowler.

Cleary, having starred in the opening game of the State of Origin series, was powerless to stop the Maroons leveling the series with a 20-point demolition of NSW before a crowd of more than 90,000 in Melbourne.

He did get a consolation prize though. Afterwards, cameras from Channel 9 panned to the dressing rooms where a devastated Cleary was being comforted by his long-term partner Fowler.

Fowler hugged Cleary and rubbed his back as he processed a devastating defeat that left NSW needing to win at Suncorp Stadium to clinch an unlikely series win.

Fowler plays her football at Manchester City in England but is back in Australia for the Matildas’ two-match friendly series against Mexico as they begin the countdown to next year’s Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
